"Can you please just-" Your mom took a deep breath from the other end of the phone. "Go to the house and relieve the babysitter, please? I'll be home in an hour at the most."
"Yes, I'm locking up now. Don't worry about it." You said as you pulled the glass door of your work closed. "Thank you, I will pay you back when I get home."
When you walked into your mom's house it was quiet, meaning your kid brother Toby had already went to bed.
Making your way to the kitchen, you heard heavy footsteps coming down the hallway; not looking up from your phone as you texted your mom.
"I'm sorry it's so late. My mom got stuck at the office and I just g-" You stopped when you saw a pair of boots instead of the flats the usual baby sitter wore.
Looking up, you're eyes were met with bright blue ones, a timid smile playing on the brunette's lips as he stuffed his left hand in the pocket of his jeans. "It's fine. He fell asleep early."
"You're... not Mallory." You noted, the much taller man pressing his lips together and shaking his head lightly. "I'm, uh, Bucky." He reached his right hand out to shake yours gently.
You gave him a light smile before clearing your throat and tearing away from his gaze. "Anyways, Bucky, sorry for making you stay so late. Last minute change to my mom's schedule." You said breathing a laugh, digging in your wallet.
"I'm guessing it's 140?" You asked, glancing up at him. He gave a quiet 'yeah' and nodded as you continued to dig in your wallet for his payment.
"Shit- I only have 120 on me." You cursed, grabbing your bag to search for any loose change. "That's fine." Bucky shrugged, shoving his other hand in his pocket.
You shook your head. "No, no it isn't. I don't like owing people money." You exhaled, scraping up another three dollars. "I can go to the ATM?"
He shook his head and cleared his throat lightly, chewing on the inside of his cheek as he contemplated what he was going to say. "Just, uh- let me take you out for coffee and we'll call it even."
You narrowed your eyes at him, footsteps padding down the hall. "You're not leaving already, are you?" Toby said from the doorway, rubbing his eye. "Toby, its already 11pm. I'm sure he wants to get home." You sighed, leaning to look behind Bucky as Toby walked to stand beside him.
"Did he show you his cool arm?" He beamed, a wide smile nearly hiding the tired look in his eyes. Bucky's cheeks tinted red at your brothers question. "No, he didn't. Now, go back to bed."
Toby tugged at Bucky's left elbow, making him chuckle nervously at the young boy. "You gotta show her, Bucky. It's so cool, she'll love it and you can take her on a date. Then you can come over all the ti-"
"Toby, bed. Now."
His lips turned down in a frown, Bucky's cheeks burning red from being put on the spot. "Sorry about him, and for being late." You started searching through your purse again. "And also being short on the mon- fuck."
You jerked your hand out of the bag when your finger scratched across a paper clip. "You ok?" Bucky stepped forward, reaching his hands out towards yours.
Your eyes caught the gleam of his left hand for just a second, before he tucked it out of sight behind his back. "Yeah, just never listened to my mom about leaving paper clips in my bag." You said breathing a laugh.
"Here." He reached his right hand toward the stack of napkins on the counter and grabbed one, holding it to your finger. "Thanks."
"Don't worry about it." He kept his eyes on your finger, not wanting to look directly at you in hopes you hadn't noticed him trying so hard to hide his hand.
"Saturday good with you?"
Bucky's eyes went wide as he looked at you. "What?" He said, shocked. "The date. To call it even."
Another tint of pink washed over his cheeks and he nodded with a light smile. "Yeah, perfect."
"Great." You smiled. "Well, it's just a scratch, and I'm sure you're very ready to go home. Ten hours of Toby can be exhausting."
He breathed a laugh and shrugged as he followed you to the front door. "He definitely has a lot of energy. It was fun though."
"Has an imagination for days." You pulled the door open and Bucky walked out onto the porch, turning to look at you once he was at the bottom of the stairs.
"I'm filling in for Mallory for her two week vacation, so... See you tomorrow?"

A/N: While I’ve been trying to stay away from whitecoding my reader inserts, I’ve never actually had any of my works focused on POC!Readers. And since I know @avintagekiss24 always appreciates more diversity in fanfic and I wanted to also write Bucky babysitting, I just combined the two things in the sweetest way possible. Little Princess
“Guys, I’ll have to leave Alisia with you. My boss wants me to take over a 4-hour shift for a colleague.” You had your 5-year-old daughter holding onto your hand.
“Steeb!” She let go of your hand and ran towards the big blonde Captain that was already sitting down on the floor to welcome her with a hug.
“Don’t overwork yourself!” Nat smiled at you before you left for your shift. At least you were compensated extra for it. You were saving up some money to buy your girl new furniture for her next birthday.
_
In the following hour, Alisia hat made her way over to Bucky to paint on his metal hand with chalk markers.
“-and then Princess Shuri made this cool suit that can absorb power.” “Woaaah.”
The little girl was completely captured by Bucky’s stories about the Princess of Wakanda.
“You remind me of her. Maybe you’ll be a princess one day.” He smiled down at her and tickled her, getting sweet little giggles back.
“Alisia? Do you wanna play with Legos?” Steve asked coming in with a pack of colorful little bricks.
“Yeees!” She plopped down on the carpet with him and they started building a little castle.
“Does Princess Shuri have a castle too?” The little girl looked up at Steve with curiosity.
“They have a little palace, but it looks way different from what you see in movies. It’s a beautiful place.” Steve smiled down, seeing her play with a little Lego version of Spider-Man.
“Can we go there?” She looked up with puppy eyes, melting several hearts in the room.
“Let’s make a deal. Once you’re old enough to go to school, we will visit Wakanda.” A big smile and a nod came back.
_
Almost everyone had left the room by the 4th hour with her, since she was so concentrated on either building a Lego castle or eating something that was given to her.
“I’ll go and check if we might be able to call her.” Steve mumbled and left Bucky alone with the little girl.
“Buck Buck?” “Ally?” He sent her a giant smile.
“Does Princess Shuri wear princess dresses?” She walked up to him and climbed onto his lap.
“No, but she always dresses very nicely and she has gorgeous hair. Just like you. Last time I saw her she had her braids in little buns left and right.” He showed her on her own head where the buns were.
“Can you do hair?” Big eyes got even bigger.
“I’ve learned a little bit from friends in Wakanda. No too much. I mean, look at me, I’m super white and my hair is so much more fragile than yours.” He made a funny face and made her giggle.
“I can braid your hair, Buck Buck,” she stated proudly.
“I believe you, you wanna braid it?” He tickled her again.
“Only if you do my hair like Princess Shuri’s.” She was cheekily demanding.
“I can make your cute little braids into buns, but I don’t think we have all those hair products for me to do your hair like I learned in Wakanda.” He made a face again.
“Buns.” she nodded and he picked her up to find some good pins, hair ties and two scrunchies to make it look cute.
_
The little girl was patiently sitting there, looking at him in the mirror.
“Okay, bare with me. I’m just a dumb white man trying his best.” He stated and sent her into a fit of giggles.
“You can do it, I believe in you, Buck Buck.” He took her box braids that were already in a high ponytail and stuck his tongue out while swirling it around, making it look as symmetrical as possible.
He could see the giant smile in his peripheral and felt the silent giggle ripple through her body.
“Like this?” He looked up and she scrunched her nose with a, “Yes.”
He put the hair ties around the buns a few times and looked up at her in the mirror. A little clap came from her which was retaliated with a little tickle attack from him.
He continued to put the scrunchies around the buns, not noticing you in the doorway. Neither did Alisia.
“Do I look like Princess Shuri now?” Ally looked at him in the mirror.
“No, you look like Princess Alisia.” An excited giggle came from her before stopping mid-giggle.
“What?” His eyes went wide.
“Mommy sometimes puts a-” She made a headscarf motion, “-around my head. She said that makes braids stay pretty longer.” She said very proud of her knowledge.
“Oh, I have a few of those that are actually from Wakanda. Let’s get them.” He picked her up and you hid from the door frame, too excited to see Bucky try his best at your daughter’s hair.
“Do you want the red one, the orange one or the pink one.” “Pink!” “Pink it is.”
The two sat back down in front of the mirror but facing each other.
“Do you want it flat, as a knot or-” “As a bow!”
“Okay, give me one second, princess.” He got out his phone and searched up how to do that.
Another session of tongue sticking out and being watched with a big smile started.
“Now turn around and tell me if I failed.” He chuckled and watched her turn around to the mirror. Her whole face lit up with a giddy dance and a happy squeal.
“Pretty?” “Yes!” She jumped into his arms.
“Mommy needs to teach you more, so you can braid it next time.” She grabbed his face.
“You wanna do mine now?” “Yeees!”
You knocked on the door frame and got both of them out of their conversation.
“Mommy!!! Buck Buck did my hair!” She ran right into your arms.
“I can see it. It’s pretty.”
“Thanks.” He scratched the back of his neck and you noticed the giant castle on the carpet.
“You all really entertained her, huh?” You grinned.
“You could say that.” He chuckled looking around a little awkward.
“Should I pay you back in takeout or braiding lessons?” You smirked.
“Why not both?” He boyishly smiled back. He really enjoyed helping your daughter feel like a princess and you really enjoyed his babysitting skills.
“Both it is.” You smiled, already knowing what you got yourself into.

"Toby seems to be warming up to the temporary pretty well." One of the Moms whispered to yours. "Bucky? He's a sweetheart. Isn't he, dear?"
You looked away from where Bucky was being swarmed by the younger kids and a couple of their older sisters you'd went to high school with; your mom giving you a sweet smile. "A big softie."
"He's great with Toby, and is sweet on a little miss someone." She grinned, poking your side as you got two bottles of water from the cooler. "Well, aren't you lucky." One of the other mom's chided. "Extremely."
"Go save him, poor boy looks like he's ready to combust." Your mom sighed, fixing a few things on the table that held cake and various types of snacks.
Turning on your heels, you went to where he was stood letting Toby babble on about his arm. "Can I borrow you for a sec?"
Bucky gave a bright smile and nodded, letting you guide him to the open back door. "I think he's have a good time showing off his super cool babysitter." You teased, handing him some extra drinks for the cooler. "Does he ever run out of energy?"
Shaking your head, you looked over the way the dark blue t-shirt clung to his skin, the dips of his muscular torso visible even through the wet fabric. "You're not gonna take that off are ya." You said, tugging the hem.
He pressed his lips into a thin line and shook his head. "Nothing wrong with being a little modest, Buck." You smiled, noticing how he chewed on the inside of his cheek. "Don't wanna, uh, scare a bunch of kids."
"Or have their dads chasing you down because, the wives are gawking at you." You said, scrunching your nose up at him. He breathed a laugh and shook his head again, leaning down to peck a simple kiss to your lips. "Yeah. I don't think that's gonna happen."
After presents were opened and cake was ate, you and Bucky hid away in the kitchen again for a few moments away from the crowd of kids and parents. "You look beautiful, sunshine." He said, adjusting the thin strap of your dress. "Don't look too bad yourself, Buck."
Your fingers wrapped around the cool metal of his dog tags, tugging them so he'd lean down; his lips ghosting across yours when he turned his head to the opening back door.
"James! There you are." Your mom breathed, pulling the door shut behind her. "Mallory just extended her vacation for another 3 weeks. Please, tell me you're available?" She clasped her hands together and gave him pleading eyes.
"Yeah, of course." Bucky smiled, nodding his head. "Great, perfect. A few of Toby's friends are staying, so I hope they don't bother you too much." She said, looking to you.
"I'm sure Bucky wouldn't mind staying to help, right?" You looked up at him, patting his chest lightly. His eyebrows raised and he nodded, swallowing thickly. "I'll stay."
"Miranda, I've been looking for you." Darlene, one of the most judgemental moms, said, Toby and her son following in behind her. "I've been meaning to ask you- where's Matthew? Shouldn't he be here instead of-" She stopped when she saw Bucky, still standing very close to you.
"He had work." Your mom said with a forced smile. "No wonder it didn't work out, that's all he thinks about." Darlene said clicking her tongue. "Now, you're stuck having to pay a babysitter who-"
"Yeah, I'm gonna stop you right there. Toby, go play outside." Bucky looked down at your hard expression, putting his hand on Toby's shoulder to walk with him into the backyard. "That's not an appropriate thing to talk about at a kid's birthday party. He is eleven, he doesn't need to know why his dad didn't show up."
"It's just- this new babysitter of yours is so-"
"Sweet? Shy, handsome, good with kids? If none of those are what you are about to say, then don't say it." She looked at you dumbfounded, glancing at your mom. "You're not gonna let her talk like this are you?"
Your mom shrugged, leaning against the kitchen counter. "She's grown. I don't dictate what she says. Besides, she's right."
"Unbelievable."
As the families dispersed, going home once the sun started to set, your mom looking exhausted as she cleaned the kitchen. "I've got it, go on to bed. You've had your stress fill for the day."
She gave you a soft thank you before shuffling away to the hallway, Bucky walking in from the chaos filled living room. "Make it out alive?" You teased, picking up the trash that littered the counter. "Barely. Need help?"
His hand rested on the small of your back, pink tinting his cheeks. "You could move the couch for me? Put this to use." You teased, fingertips running up the dark metal of his left arm before wrapping around his wrist.
You finished cleaning the kitchen and went to check on the state of the living room; Bucky laying out the blankets and pillows on the floor for the kids.
"Can we watch Nightmare on Elm Street?" Toby asked, looking up at you with hopeful eyes as you picked up the remote. "No, it's too scary for you." You said, clicking through the movie selections. "Please?"
Bucky chuckled when you rolled your eyes and nodded. "One scream out of any of you and I'm switching it to lullabies."
It didn't take long.
Not even 30 minutes into the movie you were switching it to Toy Story, ignoring the protests that sounded from them.
Another 30 minutes and they were all passed out, sprawled out on the blankets and snoring as you tugged Bucky with you to the kitchen.
"Knew that was gonna happen." You said, breathing a laugh and lifting yourself onto the counter.
Bucky moved to stand in front of you, your knees parting on instinct to let him stand between them. "Steve said he'll have your car done in a couple days. Want me to take you back to your apartment tomorrow? So, you don't have to take the train."
Nodding, you wrapped your arms around his neck loosely; pulling his lips to yours. You all but melted completely in his touch, cool, smooth metal on your right thigh a beautiful contrast to the warm skin on your left.
"I'm so fucking lucky..." He muttered against your lips before pressing his tongue against yours.
"Ew, stop eating my sisters face." You breathed a laugh at Toby's tired voice, looking over your shoulder at him. "Whst are you doing up?" You teased, turning slightly to see him better. "You know I don't like to admit when you're right..."
You were getting restless. Wanting more every time you'd get near Bucky; more of the sweetness of his kiss and gentle, adoring touches.
But hwahented things taken slow. Which you fully understood; and with the group of kids in the front room, it wasn't going to go far anyways.
"Scared?" He nodded softly and you slid off of the counter. "Calm that down and come watch some tv." You smiled at Bucky, gesturing to the strain against his athletic shorts.
Bucky's face burned as he watched you usher Toby back into the living room, staying back for a moment before following.
"Don't you dare tell anyone about this." Toby said, pointing a finger at Bucky that made him look to where you were holding the boy's hand from your spot, laid on the loveseat. "You're about as threatening as the neighbors ankle biter." Bucky retorted, sitting in the recliner.
You had turned some random TV show on, suddenly becoming extra quiet within an hour.
Bucky glanced from the screen to see you sleeping peacefully, Toby's hand barely hanging onto yours as Bucky stepped over one of the kids to grab the blanket from the back of the loveseat.
Gently laying it over you, he leaned down to press a kiss to your cheek; biting back a smile when you subconsciously tilted your head to follow his lips.

You were certain that Toby was more excited than you as he stood in the doorway of the bathroom, blabbering on and on.
"I know you think he's cool, but, he's just filling in until Mallory is back from vacation. Don't get too attached." You said, looking down at him.
His eyebrows furrowed and he crossed his arms over his chest. "Then how come you're wearing a dress? You only wear dresses for boys you like." You nudged his forehead with your palm and sighed. "You know too much for your own good."
The ring of the doorbell made a wide smile crack across Toby's face, his hands grabbing your arm to pull you with him down the hall. "He's here! C'mon!" He laughed, his dog, Cooper, darting pass both of you to get to the front door. "Calm down, kid. Gonna pull my arm off."
He all but shoved you onto the porch, smiling up at Bucky. "Here she is, bring her back in one piece. Remember our deal." Toby said before looking to you with a pointed look. "Be nice to him. We like him."
You shook your head at him as Bucky chuckled lightly from behind you, your mom rubbing a hand over her face. "Behave Tobias." She sighed, giving you a soft smile as she shut the door. "He's, uh, extra excited."
Bucky nodded, pink tinting his cheeks as he opened the car door for you. "It's all he's talked about for two days." He laughed, getting in the driver side. "Bet that's been fun."
He pulled onto the road, inhaling a deep breath. "Oh, most definitely. Your favorite flowers, ice cream flavor, color. Not to mention the talk about being a complete gentleman." He grinned, glancing over at you. "He watches a lot of soap operas with our mom."
You could tell Bucky was uncomfortable in the crowded coffee shop as you stood in line; hands stuffed in the pockets of his jeans as you reached to touch his forearm. "Wanna order and go somewhere else?" You asked, his steely eyes flicking down to look at you as he nodded lightly. "Where?"
You gave him a soft smile, squinting your eyes at him. "Its a surprise."
Once back in the car you navigated him to just outside the city, where everything was quieter and all around more pleasant.
"You're not taking me somewhere to murder me are you?" Bucky joked as he drove down a narrow back road. "No, you're too cute to do that. Take a right, here."
Finally pulling up to the small field, you both got out with coffees in hand. "Oh, wow. How did I never know this was here?" Bucky chuckled, looking at the open area of trees and grass. "Better keep it a secret. You're not allowed to bring your other dates here." You pointed, sitting in the grass; patting the spot next to you for him to sit. "More of a- date one at a time- guy. I wasn't actually expecting you to say yes. Was just taking a chance."
"If you would've said drinks and not coffee, I probably would've said no." You nodded, looking over at him. "Why?" He asked with furrowed eyebrows. "Every girl gets asked for drinks, it's rare to find someone who wants to go out for coffee." You shrugged.
Another flush of color painted his cheeks and he leaned back on his palms. "Thanks for not wanting to stay in the coffee shop. It was pretty crowded." He said softly, looking back in front of him. "You weren't comfortable. It's not fun if one of us are uncomfortable."
"There use to be a pond here, Toby loved to catch the frogs and try to talk mom into having them for pets. But- the city filled it in." You said after a minute of silence.
"You and Toby must be close, he talks about you all of the time." He said, stretching his long legs out in front of him. "Yeah, we were. Then I moved to the other side of the city and started visiting weekends," you inhaled in a breath, crossing your ankles. "Don't get to see him as much now. Living so far and work."
Two hours passed, Bucky had half expected you to be ready for him to take you home. Instead, you were sat in front of him, listening intently to how he ended up with the prosthetic arm as you traced your thumb over the dog tags that hung from his neck; not even paying attention to the dark metal and gold arm that caught the sun with every movement.
The one Toby swore to Bucky you would find 'awesome' but that Bucky felt would scare you off.
His heart rate picked up when you lifted your hand to his jaw, your thumb brushing over his bottom lip. He couldn't exactly place the look in your eyes, a mixture of sadness and adoration before you pulled his lips to yours.
A soft, simple kiss that made him melt into your touch and heart pound.
As you pulled away, Bucky pressed a kiss to your cheek, light stubble scratching your skin. "I promised I'd be a gentleman." He teased, eyes gleaming with his contagious smile.
You clicked your tongue and sighed. "Damn. Maybe next time." You smiled, letting your hand fall to his shoulder.
"Yeah, next time." He nodded, his larger hands engulfing yours as he stood, helping you up; his left hand not holding as tight as his right.
The ride back to the city was spent in comfortable silence, light music playing on the radio as you held Bucky's hand in your lap; fingers laced together.
His cheeks burned as you lightly traced the veins on the back of his hand, not wanting to let go of your hand when he pulled in front of your mom's house.
"Uh, Toby is having a birthday party soon. He really wants you to come." You said softly, Bucky nodding his head. "Yeah, of course."
His cool metal fingers held your chin as he locked his lips to yours briefly. "See you Tuesday for lunch?" He said when he pulled away, his tongue swiping across his bottom lip. "Definitely." You said breathing a soft laugh.
You saw the curtain in the living room being jerked shut when you got out of the car, going to the front door. "I saw you watching like I was a kid again, mom. Where are you?" You laughed, looking in the doorways as you walked to the kitchen.
"How was it? I wanna hear everything." Your mom beamed, getting two glasses from the cabinet for lemonade. "He's extremely sweet, like a little puppy."
She rolled her eyes jokingly, leaning against the counter. "Well, I knew that already. What else?" She urged as you lifted yourself onto the countertop. "Toby made him promise to be a gentlemen."
