Bachelor degree done
Hello fellow students!
Couple of weeks ago I did my presentation on bachelor thesis and now I’m considered qualified in Human Resources.
Quick sum up:
State exam - excellent, even though I was so stressed and terrified of it. Pro tip - it’s not a good idea to leave preparation till the last month before the exam if you’ve known the questions at the beginning of the year.
Bachelor thesis - excellent, noted outstanding by the committee. Pro tip once more: of course you can write bachelor thesis in a week, even a good one. But come on, even if you consider yourself the smartest kid (like i DID) - you’ll ruin your body.
Summary of 4 years worth of University:
You can do it.
You can do it without stressing yourself to the point of nervous breakdown (well, probably)
You can have a full time job and still do excellent at classes.
Fight for every opportunity to get experience outside your main area of study. It makes it more fun and looks good in your resume.
Being friends with professors > being friends with people from your class.
I got my name in “TO BE EXPELLED” list every semester and still was considered the best student
Try science work. Even if it’s a paper for a local science conference.
Tomorrow is the graduation ceremony, the day after tomorrow I’m applying for master degree program. On that occasion...
I promise myself to get more organised in upcoming 2 years.
(Or if not, I’ll try so during my doctorate studies)
bringing the aesthetics back!!
Day whatever/100. Finally printed out some reading material for my thesis. And flowers are still alive. 🌸
Day 3/100-6/100. Flowers and theory of motivation. Spring vibes, allergy alerts and good luck to everyone this season 🌸
Sometimes I wake up and I realize that when I did my BA in English studies 6 years ago, I actually got to write my thesis about Bones and it’s STILL crazy :D
Suspense Creation Narrative Techniques in Kathy Reichs’ Bones of the Lost
it’s soo wild, like I remember most people said how they hated writing their thesis and I was LOVIN’ mine and I had the most amazing teacher help me through the process as well <3
I might just end up reading this again one day o.O
29th April 2020: My Undergraduate Studies ‘Online’ Thesis Defense
It’s the 7th week of quarantine. Yes, I’m going to keep count of my quarantine week because I’m wondering when this pandemic will end and you would want to know how long you’ve been cooped up at your home when all of this ends. So, I count mine.
Anyway, 29th April 2020 was a big day for me because it’s my thesis defense day! I was excited the day before and on 1 am before I slept because I would be one step closer to graduating from my bachelor studies. However, everything will be done online. My presentation have been done in a form of a video and the questioning will be done through a form of a video conference.
And I thought I have prepared very well because I kept on studying and communicating with my supervisors when there’s something I don’t understand. I was very confident and I don’t feel nervous at all before the video conference. Well, until the video conference commenced, I realized that I am very stumped and clearly not well prepared.
The very first question is a simple one, it’s to explain my research in an easier way for my professor (who isn’t from my field of study) to understand. It’s easy but I was fidgeting and getting panic because what I can think of is a block diagram and I can’t really draw it because we’re doing it online. I wanted to explained it visually but I was too nervous to think that I can draw on application like PAINT and by the way, I don’t have those digital pen you could use to write at your computer. So, I’m not really familiar with that. I am more on a conventional writer, or typist rather than someone who literally write digitally in his/ her laptop.
I end up trying to explain through pictures I found in a journal that I have read and it’s kind of similar to the one that I meant. But since she’s not from my field of study, my choice of wording might not be the best for her to understand. I can’t really see her facial expression because all of my professors close the camera, including me (to prevent poor connection, since I’ve been out and in connection TWICE!). I can’t see if she approved the way I explain it to her and if I can see her facial expressions then I might be able to change my approach in explaining to her. So, of course, she kept on saying that she didn’t understand much but she get the gist.
It was kind of frustrating and I realized that all of the professors are criticizing my thesis script because it was unsystematic, too short and I think there well a lot of things in my research that I didn’t mention there. Because of that, the questions are revolving around what I should have included in my thesis. I didn’t get to explain the complicated stuff that I spent days studying.
What made it worst is that, my supervisor even criticize me which made me feel I was beyond help. I think he was disappointed that I didn’t mention a thing about what he explained to me a few days ago regarding my research problems (he was even late for my friend’s thesis defense because of that). However, he still help me explain what I couldn’t to the other professors. I think there were too much to explain and I feel I wasn’t entirely transparent in my script that I didn’t know where to start.
To be honest, I would definitely cry during that time but I can’t. The people around me who knew that I was going to have thesis defense that day were happy for me. My sister who’s staying with me, keep on sending updates to my parents. My parents were excited for me and even bought me pizza that day. Some of my friends even bought me gifts and congratulate me. My social media kept on buzzing. It was supposed to be a day I would be happy and relieved since I had done the thesis defense. But that day, I finished with an inexplicable feelings. I feel empty, I was not really happy nor sad. But I can’t really show that when my friends came over and of course, they made me smile since during this quarantine, they would still come to visit me. It’s really sweet of them. So, I didn’t cry that day, I just try to enjoy everyone’s well wishes and chatting away with my friends.
But I did cry the day after. I recorded my video conference and tried to listen to it because I need to know which part I should revised and their suggestion regarding it. I can’t really bring myself to watch the entire video, besides it being two hours long, it was dreading for me. Watching it made me feel all the emotions I should have felt that time and I cried naturally.
I was worried that because of my poor performance, I would not get a good mark for my thesis. Aside from that, I do feel useless for not being able to score right in a questions. Maybe if I view my thesis defense as a discussion it would feel better but I really can’t because I kept on remembering the time my professor criticize me right there. But, he was very kind to actually offer me an online meeting with him afterwards to discuss what to revise in my script. I mean everyone will get revisions in their script but he was kind enough to explain to me thoroughly what I should rewrite and fix in my writings.
Of course, with all those unpleasant experience, I was still allowed to pass by the board of professors. So, I still passed but with a lot of revisions that is. I don’t know what score I will get but I hope my revisions will help in increasing the mark. Anyway, that’s it for my online thesis defense! I don’t like having it online, and I hope I won’t experience that if I further my studies.

PS. The flowers are from my friends, seniors and juniors in the university’s Buddhist community. It’s really sweet of them and I like the yellow bright color. I was really moved by all the things they did for me that day that I couldn’t possibly bring myself to feel sad.
