I know I've uploaded full speedpaints of stuff before, but in case anyone was curious about stuff like bricks/floor boards specifically, this is pretty much how I do it. First strong gradients over the surface and then I add some smaller gradients at the bottom of each brick/board, trying to add a different amount each time so they never look exactly the same color
Two questions:
1. How do you do backgrounds?
2. How do you do colouring? Like with Violetpaw, who's described as a black and white cat. I literally thought she was purple initially, but I realised cats can't actually be purple. I saw your Die Young animation before actually reading all the books (there are like a million books, and books are expensive, please bare with me). Anyways, I love your style! I think your Violetpaw design is really cute:)
QUESTION 1: (i also answer the second Q its just at the end of the post!)
If you had asked me about how to do backgrounds like a year ago I wouldn't have answered because I didn't really have a process besides fiddle around and hope and pray LOL but! now I've figured out a way I like to do it so here we gooo
I'll be using this commission I did as an example! I've also JUST posted a speedpaint of it here (lucky that i was working on this bg heavy piece when i saw ur ask!)

Zhuzhing Your Backgrounds
I am of the belief that you can cram as much stuff into a character’s house as they’ll allow and still make it look good, so as you read this, keep that in mind. As with drawing, I also believe that you can draw nearly anything and make it appealing with small adjustments.
So I know you didn’t want a tutorial on how to do backgrounds but I feel like that’s a part of all this so I’ll just give a quick rundown and get everyone on the same page...
I’ve had a few asking how I do these backgrounds, and I finally remembered to save the time-lapse for it! Sorry for the choppiness, I tried to slow it down a bit to be easier to see
When I started with drawing I was afraid of Backgrounds for the longest time! I found a way to slowly approach BGs and get better and more daring over time!
This small tutorial won't really go into perspective. It's more a small guide on how to start easy and lose fear!
Little shoutout to @Alturdbutt on Devart who originally asked for one!
Steps explained: 1. Sketch your scenery roughly, this is where you decide where your objects will be placed. Keep in mind the foreground, midground, and background. Use your chosen reference to get a feel for where things should be placedIn the second sketch I have the foreground - mid - and background highlighted in sections 2. Keeping the sketch layer on top, begin blocking out your colors for any sky visible and your foreground/midground. Use your sketch roughly, and feel free to add things
3. Place the background. Usually, objects in the very back will appear lighter and this creates depth, of course this can depend on your individual piece and the mood you want to create 4. Get rid of the sketch layer 5. Start refining shapes. Things like grass, leaves, and other textures
6. The last step, adding necessary shading and lighting. This can really make or break a background, and a knowledge in color theory really helps here. Make sure everything looks cohesive!
