Today I revisited a place I stumbled upon last season. A place I protect because it's a wee gem! Check out the views:
I went with Cypher, who was giddy about this tour start to finish. Cypher is like...a private eye for backcountry ventures. His list of goals is long and involves many couloirs, so we ride together often, and I occasionally feel intimidated around him. (That's high praise. Intimidation, for me, indicates great respect and admiration in another...pretty rare!) It felt damn good to know a spot he's never heard of (and know it delivers)!
I came out here once last season with my pup and have been itching to go back. My assessment from East Portal earlier this week was correct. This place was poppin!
Around mile 2 of the 3.5 mile skin up (with 3000 ft elavation gain, it was a workout) we dug a pit on a southeast facing aspect, which tips onto the unstable aspects (currently N thru SE). The snowpack was surprisingly well-consolidated. (ECT 30, no propagation)
It had about 20 cm of beautifully consildated snow (with 1 or 2 well-consolidated hard layers) andon top of about 6" of sugar (aka graupel, or granular snow). Considering the depth of the snowpack, we figured this an example of the CAIC forecast discussion mentioning deeper packs turning to "low-risk. High consequence"--the springtime trademark of CO. An ECT30 is plenty fun to ride on! We should have dug more than 1 pit tho. We were doing cutaways into slopes and pole pokes the whole way up. Always gather data!
We didn't summit, since it was as wind scoured as I'd anticipated:
But from the saddle between the two nearby peaks, we could see a lot of great choices. We ended up riding the trees show above, but we want to come back for all the terain (and a verrrrry long run) from the lower peak. Just look at that open space above the trees! Yum.
The ride down was a glorious 2000 ft, most of which was fresh turns in trees with plenty of face shots. We also did some honest-to-gosh skimo. (Read: we took a turn randomly and it was shallow cover and flat lololol) With the snow as nice as it is, we'll for sure be back. On the hike out, we discussed a few strategies to do multiple runs in a day. This would be a great spot for a kicker. :D
This was the 6th and longest tour of the season for both of us. It was 6 miles out and back and took 4 hours. Most of the descent grades were gentle (28-34 degrees).
I drank more water than I have on a tour thsi season, but still not enough. Gotta fix my water bladder! I had a blast on my new Arbor splitty. Shit is so surfy and fun!
