Jack Wright Island is named after John Wright and his family who settled there in 1811. They built their homestead on the northern part of the island, now known as Hemlock Cove. The Wrights were involved with farming potatoes and sugar beet crops until they sold their land to William Buell in 1895 who built a summer resort there called "Ballymore". It was later renamed "Ballymore Lodge" in honour of its former owners' home county in Ireland: County Donegal).
