MEAT MEAL #6: Ambitious
Mary Beth (now in her 3rd meaty meal) and I waltzed into Bakin' and Eggs more than a half hour later than our goal of 9:00am. Really should have seen that coming. It was a lofty goal to schedule a meaty meal that early in the morning and an even loftier goal to eat 3 huge meaty meals in 1 day, but I had no intention of slouching or slacking on day 3.
This delightful eatery was relatively empty, though I could image it gets pretty busy for weekend brunches. And rightfully so - not only do they serve food, but they also operate as a bakery with a boatload of delicious pastries behind glass which were as much a feast for the eyes as I'm sure they are for the stomach.
Mary Beth tells me to order 2 things. First - bacon waffles. Yep. Bacon. Waffles. Waffles with bacon in the batter, topped with a very long strip of bacon sprinkled, nay, covered with powdered sugar. When placing the order, the waitress asked me a question for which I was wholly unprepared: "What type of bacon?"
What type?! That's right, they make 5 different kinds: maple pepper, jalapeno, honey, cherry smoked, and mesquite. I looked at Mary Beth with what must have been pure panic in my eyes and she calmly told me she prefers the honey bacon. Sold! Luckily, this decision was a lot less critical than I had feared because we also ordered a flight of bacon.
I've had flights of beer plenty of times. It's a great way to experience a variety of the unique flavors that a brewery offers without buying full pints and spending a fortune. My assumption here was that it would be similar - a sample platter offering smaller versions of each kind of bacon. Not so. We were served a plate of 5 very long pieces of bacon, each very thick and hearty on its own; this could have been a full meal if you really felt like only eating bacon.
As I understand it, bacon is pretty hard to screw up. You make it hot and it somehow smells and tastes like the most wonderful thing ever imagined. That may or may not be the case, but every restaurant and frankly every person could learn a lot from Bakin' and Eggs. Each piece had subtle differences in flavor and it was clear that they take great care in taking the bacon experience to the next level.
While Meat Week is inherently an inclusive event in which everyone is invited and it's all about great food and great friends, I decided right then and there that Meat Week is now a competition and Mary Beth is winning. With 3 meals under her belt, one of which was a surprise, one which was the best meal so far, and one which was the only breakfast anybody proposed, she is in a commanding lead. Perhaps I'll do some superlatives when this is all over.
Already exhausted and stuffed with food, I set off to my next meaty adventure. An adventure full of mystery...
constantly wanting things that are bad for me.
