Multi-lab effort to study properties of Ganga waters.
· * A multi-lab effort by National Environmental Engineering Research Institute(NEERI), Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants(Lucknow) and the Institute of Microbial Technology(IMTech,Chandigarh) is studying the possible medicinal properties of the waters of the Ganga.
· * It has been observed that samples of water close to the source of Ganga do not putrefy.
· * One of the hypothesis is that the water of the river contain bacteriophages-viruses that replicate within bacteria and are toxic to them. These antimicrobial properties of the water are under study and whether these could be translated into effective drugs in future.
