24 February - Heavy Snow Causes Roof to Collapse while People Inside are Showering, Playing Tennis

It had been snowing a lot lately. The snow was thick & heavy, & accumulated on every surface.

Jeff Kaiser woke up early Saturday morning & went to the Lake Shore Indoor Racquet Club, the business he managed & partially owned.  As he wandered the courts in the empty building, he noticed that there were several large cracks in the ceiling. They seemed to stretch to the roof.  Just to be sure, Jeff called Bill Dobbelaere, the building engineer.

Bill hustled over, & examined the roof.  He said there was a lot of snow up there, but nothing they could really do about it except wait for it to thaw out.  Just in case, he did recommend they close the racquet courts in the middle of the building, under the small cracks in the ceiling.  But, he really didn't think it would be a big deal.

Robert Sacross was a 31 year old lawyer who was playing in the club that morning, just a few hours after the roof had been inspected.  He was on one of the courts in the middle - one that hadn't been emptied as per the recommendation.  

Sharp pops caught his attention.  He looked up mid game to see the roof start to collapse in two spots.

"I could see the cracks developing…I looked at my partner and said 'Let's get out of here…this is ridiculous."

Bob Nathan was standing on the balcony when the cracks swelled up & the roof started to come down.  

"I started running for my life.  As I ran downy the stairs, the roof was collapsing all around me."

Others were in the locker room taking showers when the roof began to fall. They quickly grabbed towels & run out of the building, wet & naked behind the thin bit of cloth.

Thankfully, no one was injured in the building collapse.

Those who had been in the showers had to wait an hour before they were able to get their clothes again.
