Badge Day

On Monday March 3rd the University of Alberta's Panhellenic Sororities held a gathering to celebrate their chapters individual badges and their importance to their members. It was a very special day for all four of the Panhellenic chapters on campus that allowed for bonding over sisterhood, greek love, and of course great food!

Here's one of our Seniors Azra Mustajbasic's speech she made explaining why wearing her golden arrow brings her such pride.

I’m Azra, I’m a Pi Phi and I initiated in 2010. I did two years of sciences and I’m in my second year of Pharmacy. I volunteered to talk about why I love my badge because I believe that our badge is the most special token of our fraternity. It’s a way of expressing who I am and what I believe in. Throughout my years of wearing the golden arrow, there are a few things I loved about my badge. First off, it’s a beautiful and classy accessory to any sort of professional wear. It’s so unique too. I don’t find it very common to see people wearing pins any more, and even though it’s small it stands out. I get many compliments on my pin, asking me where I got it, in which I proudly say it’s the badge and symbol of my sorority. In this sense I found it to be a great conversation starter, and an excuse to talk about Pi Phi and brag about all the things on my fraternity, which I love to do. It spreads awareness of Greek life and a small recruitment tool. Wearing my badge gives me such a great sense of pride. I wear my badge when I work in my pharmacy, when I go to my communication labs, whenever I'm dressed in a semi-formal setting, in interviews. It gives me confidence that it helped me become the woman I am and when I wear it I am more aware of how I represent the fraternity, and so I conciously strive to be a better person, honor all of our values, and be a leader. I want to impress. I want to come across as a unique and great woman, and then when people ask me about my badge, and I tell them it's my sorority, that I am part of Pi Beta Phi, they will connect sororities with woman of great value and determination, with good work ethic, and it helps with the next step of breaking the stereotype. We always are told that the fraternity isn't four years, it's for life, and even though I'm leaving the collegiate life and going into the alumi life, I plan to continue to wear my badge and continue to promote and uphold the name of my fraternity.
