Bruers cooking for hikes May 2016
Carol Service 2015
The Barton St David Scout Group met up for their annual Carol Service at Barton St David church, the service was a mixture of rousing carols, readings and musical solos from some of our very talented scouters.
The service was led by Jane Sedgeman who delivered the Christmas message with great warmth. During the service, awards were presented for Bronze, Gold and Platinum Chief Scouts Awards to those in Beavers Scouts and Explorer Scouts.
After the service all were invited back to the village hall for warm apple cider and mince pies. It was a great ending to a fantastic year for Barton St David Scout Group.
Explorers - Orienteering - July 2015
Barton Explorers 'The Bruers' met at Combe Hill Woods and were given a series of numbered posts which they had to find on the orienteering map and plan the best route to complete in the fastest time. They collected information from each post as they found them and navigated using a compass.
All teams finished having successfully found every marker. It was fantastic fun and we are very grateful to Team Molloy for running this fantastic session. A wonderful way to spend a summer's evening.
Explorers - Homelessness
This week The Bruers visited Lediniaire at the Holy Trinity Scout HQ to learn about the issue of homelessness. The talk was led by Alison Cox of Knightstone and she took the Explorers through the topic keeping it very informative and localised, speaking with great passion about The Foyer which is a place that homeless people can go for help and support.
Alison broke up the presentation with group discussions and decision making exercises. The Explorers will be given the opportunity to continue with the 'homeless' theme at a later event by spending a night out in Yeovil as a 'homeless' person and being given £2 on food for themselves.
Explorers: Big Bash Camp 2015
The Big Bash Camp is a weekend activity camp held for Explorers from the East Somerset District. It is held in Curry Rivel with water activities based on the River Parrett in Langport, and land activities based on the campsite and surrounding area. All Explorers had a fantastic time and spent their Saturday participating in activities such as Canoeing, Making and sailing a coracle and building a raft which successfully negotiated its way along the river. Barton Explorers 'The Bruers' took the opportunity to be invested on the water and the ceremony was conducted by Assistant District Commissioner for 14-25, Pete Ward. On Saturday evening we all went on a trekking trail set up by the Network Scouts and finished the day around a roaring campfire. On Sunday we enjoyed air rifle shooting and archery in the morning prior to striking camp and heading home. Grateful thanks to Ritchie from the Lendiniae Explorers for organising the event, we were made to feel very welcome and we look forward to more of the same next year.
Explorers: Sub-aqua
The Explorers were issued with sub aqua equipment and then buddied an instructor who in turn provided an unforgettable 1:1 experience which lasted for an hour. Each Explorer was taken through a safety briefing and taught the basic hand signals for use in the pool. Once the regulators were mastered and the sign for OK was exchanged each of them immersed themselves into an underwater world. Once the Explorers were deemed competent each instructor took their charge over the 'shelf' into the 3 metre deep section of the pool which the Explorers thought was particularly brilliant. Grateful thanks go to Street Sub Aqua Club who so kindly hosted the session-they were fantastic.
Explorers: programme planning and fire-making
The Explorers met in Orchard Park Farm Wood and after getting a roaring fire going with the Explorers using flints they got down to some planning of their future programme in line with The Scout Association’s Vision 2018 which promotes the full participation of the young people in the planning and running of their sessions. They came up with some great ideas encompassing all the challenge areas and this will be pulled together into what will be a very exciting and fulfilling programme for the forthcoming period. To aid the flexing of their grey muscle popcorn was cooked in abundance on the fire and devoured by all.
Explorers: Butleigh Fete 2015
The Explorers volunteered to help at Butleigh Fete and the Fete Committee asked us to run the 'Wire Buzzer' game. All the participants had a great time and some proved to have very steady hands. It was a great afternoon and a fantastic opportunity to be fully involved with the local community.
Explorers - Backwoods - 28 May 2015
On arrival in the woods the Explorers collected dry dead wood and built a campfire. Whilst they waited for the campfire to burn down in order to be able to cook in the embers, the Explorers learnt how to erect a hammock. They learnt the knot skills involved and the theory behind the structure and went on to erect two hammocks which they tried out. They unanimously agreed that they were really comfortable and could quite happily have dozed off!
When the campfire had died down, the Explorers cut open bananas and filled them with chocolate flakes and mini-marshmallows before wrapping them in foil and placing them in the embers. Once cooked they were a tasty, sticky treat. Finally the Explorers were shown how to 'feather' wood and each had a turn with some rather extreme knives!
Scouts and Explorers canoeing and kayaking - May 2015
Barton Explorers and Scouts enjoyed joint sessions of canoeing and kayaking at Sutton Bingham reservoir. It’s a three session course and Explorers and Scouts will be instructed in basic canoeing including capsize drill. It was a beautiful evening on the water and a good time was had by all. Grateful thanks to the district team for hosting this course.
Explorers: Making a Rocket Oven, 7 May 2015
The Explorers built a 'rocket oven' using bricks. After collecting kindling the oven was lit and used to boil water to make hot chocolate.
Whilst they were waiting for the kettle to boil the Explorers built a campfire under the supervision of Vee, our very own Bear Grylls! They used the campfire to cook hotdogs which they demolished along with the hot chocolate at the end of the session.
It was a fantastic evening and the time flew by. The Explorers left feeling very excited about more 'Backwoods' sessions in the next couple of months.
Explorers: Air Rifle Shooting, 29 April 2015
Explorers enjoyed a very successful evening of shooting, hosted by Castle Cary Scouts.
After a safety briefing, all Explorers and Scouts had an opportunity to fire with varying types of air rifle. Many thanks to Chris Jones and his team for a well run, fun activity.
This is the first of many adventurous activities arranged for the Explorers for this term and it went with a bang!!! We have other adventures 'in our sights'!
St George’s Day Parade 2015
Barton St David Scout Group joined other scout groups in East Somerset District for the annual St George’s Day Parade.
Explorers at Barton St David Scout Group
Barton St David Scout Group is delighted to announce we’ll be opening an Explorer Scout Unit.
Explorer Scouts are young people, usually aged between 14 and 18 years old.
They make up the fourth section of the Scouting family after Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.
As with some other Groups, our Unit will not meet every week, partly due to activities, holidays, exams and the other commitments that crop up in a teenager’s life, and also because Explorers tend to get out and about at weekends more often than other sections.
The meeting night will usually be a Thursday and the Unit will generally meet either at Barton St David Village Hall or at Orchard Park Farm in Hornblotton.
Explorer Scouts often get the chance to work with other Explorer Scouts in the District, not just their own Unit, so can take part in an even wider spectrum of activities including canoeing, caving, climbing wall, rafting, camping (locally, nationally and internationally), air rifle shooting and hillwalking.
There’s also a range of ambitious badges and awards, through which Explorers can demonstrate their proficiencies and expand their interests.
We plan to support the Explorers through their Duke of Edinburgh and Chief Scout Awards.
If you’re interested in becoming an Explorer Scout with Barton St David or you have any questions, please email us on [email protected]
Barton St David Scout Group - 21 Dec 2014 - bag packing at Sainsbury's
Beavers, Cubs and Scouts spent the morning bag-packing at Sainsbury's in Street.
We raised a fantastic £394.12.
Many thanks to everyone who came along to help - it was much appreciated. Thanks too to Sainsbury's in Street for supporting us.
Barton St David Scout Group Christmas Carol Service 16 Dec 2014
Barton St David Scout Group held its annual Carol Service in St David's Church in Barton St David, led by Jane Sedgeman.
We were delighted to be joined by Tim Burch, out-going District Commissioner, and Heather Pitts, Assistant District Commissioner for Beavers.
We sang lots of carols and listened to readings and music.
Bethan, one of the scouts, played Jingle Bells on her violin - she was brilliant.
The first reading was read by Jane, an assistant scout leader.
The next lesson was read by Danny, a young leader in Beavers.
Ralph, a scout, played Silent Night on his guitar - he was fantastic.
Santa’s Christmas Prayer’ was read by Beavers: Felicity, Emilia, Millie, Abi, Jago; and Scouts: William, Alex and Fergus.
Tim Burch, out-going District Commissioner, then presented two Beavers, Felicity and Thomas, with their Bronze Chief Scout Awards, which is the highest award a Beaver can achieve. Many congratulations.
Afterwards, we went back to the hall for refreshments kindly provided by Neil and Emma MacDonald.
Trudie Gordon had made an amazing cake with the "Frozen" theme for the raffle which, once again, was won by William. Many thanks Trudie.
Wishing everyone a Happy Christmas and New Year from Barton St David Scout Group!
Barton St David Scout Group Remembrance Day Parade November 2014
One of the Scouts, Fergus, read one of the lessons.
Everyone gathered outside for the two-minute silence.
One of the Scouts, Hannah, played the Last Post on her trumpet.
Afterwards, we had a team photo.
