Oh yeah! I totally understand that. I’m glad I wasn’t just steamrolling you on “no that’s gross” haha. Fashion is a minefield of fetishization and grossness and it sucks
so so true
after reading some more on it i think i kind of get their point (even though the "she's ok cause she's kinda chinese is still hella dumb). if so and so never wears cat eye but wear it to a china themed event as a bid to look "more exotic" then yeah it's kinda gross but they're still kind of grasping at that one. i get that the qipao was always a little sexy but i will agree with them on basically taking away half the fabric adds to the "exotic asian slut" stereotype an that's kinda gross
i see what you mean! i always think i come at issues of sexualization differently because i’m fat and we are told fat people are not Sexy or Desirable so i have trouble seeing how those stereotypes can be negative, if that makes sense? like when i was younger i really admired and looked up to geisha and the China Doll trope because they were always beautiful and delicate and graceful and sexy and those are things i was never allowed to feel about myself
but i get that it’s a double edged sword, because chinese women are supposed to be perfect submissive sex dolls to fulfill your every fantasy as much as they are graceful and poised
man asian beauty and fashion is such a fucking minefield of fetishization and orientalism and it’s exhausting
what's your take on winged eyeliner though? that one article says one girl is allowed to wear it because it's part of her look and because she's like a quarter chinese and that seems strange to me? like it's already such a hot look and i think way more associated with the 50s than any asian cultures. i even looked up geisha makeup and the most striking part is the red eye shadow, not so much the eyeliner and the "wing" on geisha eyeliner is totally different than is popular atm. what do u think?
i saw that and it made me roll my eyes too!! especially the “oh she gets a pass because her dad is three quarters chinese” like, um, no?? that’s not how that works??
so what i think the author meant is that if you do winged eyeliner that doesn’t curve, it can sort of look like it’s mimicking the traditional almond-shaped monolid eye but i also think that’s wrong and cat eyes are totally just a fashion trend at this point
also the point about the “over-sexualized qipao” made me go “ugh really?” too because qipao are not like this traditional garment, they were designed to be sexy and form-fitting, young modern women wore them and it was sort of scandalous because before then they dress everyone wore was a lot loser and hid the female form better
so actually, the qipao is always a least a little sexual, and i think that’s fine?
not a perfect article and i disagree with some points, but it was the only other article i found that wasn’t just fawningly positive about some real racist shit (the other was jezebel and i hate jezebel as a personal rule)
bagerbeiger replied to your post: i googled more pictures of the met gal...
why is everyone almost naked? i mean no shame is cool but is it just me or is everyone almost naked? is it the theme (china=naked???) or is everyone trying to one up rihanna’s swarovski crystal dress?
i don’t know. i give up. i am confused.
pro tip: don’t try and read any of the articles because it’s all just clueless white people patting each other on the back and i think?? i actually have a headache now???
this article is a breath of fresh air tho
