#bagginshield fandom

Hi! I'm years late to Thorin/Bilbo, I don't know how and why (LOTR books/movies are my all time favorites and I have been a fan for decades) I missed it all but yesterday I suddenly realized I love that ship, of course I am struggling to find any active blogs, communities, challenges etc. since I am five years late. Would you have anything to recommend? Are there even active blogs at all? I am asking you because Tumblr recommended me your blog when I was searching for it. Thank you in advance!

well i can say the fandom is still fairly active, especially within the bagginshield fandom. 

to begin with i would say at least follow the bagginshield (and thilbo too) tag, because it does tend to update daily (sometimes its just the auto ao3 blog but still). and also check out ao3′s bagginshield tag. its not 100% the best all the time but if youre willing to look for fics that sound good, you will find them! 

in fact i’ll link to @lesbiankiliel‘s fic rec for that link (also she does a ton of reccing so check out her fic rec tag too) 

re: blogs 

honestly i follow a lot of people so i cant rec everyone that i know (because i forgot sometimes) but i can give you a couple of people in the fandom (and if anyone who sees this wants to add on that theyre an active blog in this fandom pls do)

Gift exchange?

So, I'll be on a short holiday and will be away from Tumblr until Sunday, but I'd like to take the chance and leave a question for ny Bagginshield mutuals ... Would some of you be interested in a "real" gift exchange for the holidays? I know that there are some fic/art exchanges, but would there be an interest in crafting little gifts and actually send them to your partner? Like a Secret Santa? I already took part in such an event once, and sending a parcel to somebody was really exciting ... as well as receiving one, of course! I know it's quite early for such a thing, but please let me know what you think nonetheless ^^

Update: Since there is an interest, I’ve decided that I’ll organize a Bagginshield gift exchange for the winter holidays! :)

It’s still a bit time to go, but since autumn is approaching for some of you, I guess you might take the chance to already collect some acorns and oak leaves … it’s Bagginshield, after all! ;)

But I’d also like to remind you that you don’t have to be as crafty as a dwarf to join this gift exchange! Art and drawings count as well, of course – as do keychains and picture frames and notebooks and bracelets and and and …

The sign-ups will probably be at the end of October, and November will be for crafting so we can send out the gifts in time and they’ll reach our partners before the holidays!

I’m already looking forward to it :)

Regarding this post I made last August when-i-see-fem-bilbo-aus 

I want to apologize to everyone whom I’ve offended with my pathetic opinion; nothing justifies my childish reaction towards this particular representation of this wonderful fandom and I won’t go into further details of how bad I feel for the actions I committed at that time. I’ve learned to accept every expression of love there is to be found within this fanbase and respect those ideas of whom support the positive growth of bagginshield. I’d like to specifically offer a sincere apology to @godihatethisfreakingcat and @muchymozzarella for being the ones I feel I offended the most. My tolerance levels were crippled at that time and I’m sorry you had to witness that. I won’t delete that post by the way, I’ll leave it there as a title of shame this blog and I will have to carry on as long as we stand. Once again I’m sorry and I hope we can start from scrap. ♥

I was tagged by @radioproxy so here’s my first Hobbit/Bagginshield fic with my most recent (posted to AO3). 

#1: “Near to You” - technically Bofur/Bilbo with past-Bilbo/Thorin. Rather nicely predicts just how devastated and broken Bilbo was when returning to Bag End, for all that it was written just after AUJ came out. 

#32: “All We Are” Missing scene from Lake-town, just after the vouching, Thorin reveals that he’s not the hero that Bilbo thinks him to be, and Bilbo reassures to the contrary.

I feel the same way, and a bit like it's specific to bagginshield? the lack of variety I mean, and I don't know, maybe it has to do with the fact that it's not a juggernaut ship level like johnlock or destiel ie, but yeah

I remember back when bagginshield was starting out people got called out on straying too far from canon oh my god and I remember being so nervous starting ngcs because modern au!!! hdu!!!!! but we’ve gotten better at variety since :’)

“Juggernaut ship” is a good word for it, I think you just get huge fandoms in those areas that are all looking for fresh content, so you get a ton more variety in terms of AUs, and then those AUs get AUs based on them, etc etc. It’s also the source of what I call “character drift” but it doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Personally I see wild AUs that are far from the source material as a particularly fun challenge for “How do I keep the characters as IC and recognizable as I can, given that 90% of the circumstances that make them who they are have changed?” 

But yeah, Bagginshield was sort of unusual. I think it’s a bit the “Our Lord Tolkien” stuff, there’s so much backstory for the LotR ‘verse that there’s little need to speculate. We have pretty strict timelines. The modernizations at first were mostly just involved in creating a parallel mythology in modern times, rather than treading new ground. Also, I think with AUJ at least, Thorin was a bit mysterious. It really took I’d say as late as BotFA for us to see the full arc of his character, so it’s hard to transplant him to wildly different places and keep him recognizable, when we hardly knew who he (or some of the other dwarves) WERE for a long time. And when it comes to the other dwarves who didn’t get much screen time (ex. Nori) it took awhile for people to be like “Fuck it, I’ll give him a personality and backstory rather than wait for canon.” 

There was a weird sort of pressure though, I agree, to keep things fairly canon for a long time. I’m not complaining, merely observing. I love canon fics, I tend to stick to canon fics, but there are times when I’ve shot down my own plotbunnies for being too “out there” and now I kinda want to adjust my thinking. I’d probably still stick to mostly canon stuff, but make a little room for the occasional outlier. I hope that external pressure has faded a little so writers don’t feel constrained :) But again too, my reading is extremely narrow, so I could just be discounting a whole huge field of fics. I know I certainly am for ships outside Bagginshield (which I don’t read).
