Doing A Truckee float in Laos
Vang Vieng is world renowned. Any backpacker who has been through SE Asia can tell you why. We knew because we first heard about it from friends in Mozambique. The thing about Vang Vieng, other than open lobby hostels jammed packed with bed couches with TV’s rerunning Friends episodes 24 hours a day, is there is a river that runs through it. This river, called the Nam Song, is slightly larger than our Truckee. The only difference is that instead of apartments backing up to it, the Vang Vieng is lined by bars. A lot of bars by our standards, and the crazy thing is there used to be more. But let me back up just real fast and let you know how we got there.
We took a bus from Luang Prabeng. It was fairly comfortable as far as buses go, but the road we were on was on the edge of a cliff at times. This cliff wound up and down the mountains, wound around corners, and wound past street side shacks. It was very windy. Not enough to make us sick, only enough to almost throw you out of your seat fifty or so times. We eventually made it to the terminal in Vang Vieng, which again, curtesy of the Laotians is not in the center of town. Opting out of the overpriced tuk-tuk in, we walked this time and although it was longer than expected it was not too bad. After wondering by the aforementioned open lobby “Friend” Zones we got to our place, very perplexed by what we had just seen. Why is there any need for so many beds? So many TV’s? And so many different episodes of Friends? An explanation came a little later the next day and we will get to that. We met up with our Dutch friends from the riverboat trip and went out to dinner. We made a plan to float the mighty Vang Vieng the next day and we retired back to our accommodations.
The first order of business on the morning of June 8 was to get a bag of wine. We found one from a very nice lady who didn’t over charge all that much, it may have been $30 for 5 liters which works out to be pretty cheap. But even if it was $100 we still would have needed it. You cannot float a river without a bag to slap. Once we snagged the wine, we found a cheap waterproof bag an purchased one of those too. This was one item we wished we would have brought from the start as we had five back home. Many a time on our trip we needed to keep things dry and they just ended wet, and it was about time we put an end to that problem. With these two items in tow and our Hawaiian shirts on, we met at the rendezvous which was the tube rental place. For $6 you get a tube for the day, and it has to be back by sundown. If not, you pay the penalty which is another $7. We signed our lives away, piled into the tuk-tuk with the tubes piled on the top and headed to the drop in location. Apparently 11am is early. When we arrived we were the only ones at bar #1. Well other than the workers who were all expats, and who were all in neon swimming gear, headbands, aviator glasses and wrists full of cheap twine bracelets. We came to realize that this was the uniform of everyone on the river. 11 may be early for the float to start, but it was not too early to start playing beer pong apparently. Slowly over the next few hours other floaters arrived and after much poking and prodding we influenced some people to follow us into the river and get this thing going. The mentality of the people there was that they only had to sundown and that the pull out point was not too far. So drink and stay at all the bars longer for a better time. We were of the mind that the longer we spend on the river, the more fun we have. That is why we brought the bag of wine. It was a culture clash, but the result was glorious.
After about ten minutes in the river, a rope flew out of the trees and across the river: the first bar. Those who were close grabbed ahold and were towed to the edge of the river by some 14 year olds, where they then had to scale a mini cliff wall. At the top we were greeted by an English bird who tied neon twine bracelets on our wrists and gave us all a shot of “whiskey”. Then we were shuffled into the bar area and much like the first location, there were other people all dressed up in neon playing drinking games. We offered up the bag to a few folks. After they all tried to drink straight from the spout, we gave them a proper lesson in river etiquette and showed them how to slap then slurp. After this demonstration, we were approached by a girl who was stoked that we had been slapping the bag. We told her this was everyday practice on the Truckee and then she informed us she was from Sacramento and it was common practice on the American River. Imagine that…you learn something new every day. All of the bars we went to that day offered some form of entertainment: volleyball, soccer, hula-hoop, basketball, dance stages, slip and slides, you name it. We would partake in bits of this and that, and it was quite enjoyable. About the time we were leaving the first bar it started to rain. This didn’t really pose a problem since we were already in our swimming costumes, it just gave the atmosphere a slight chill. Its a known fact that whiskey is cheaper than a blanket and you can’t take a blanket on the river. With that in mind, we managed to stayed warm enough.
As the day dragged on and we made it further downstream, everyone was getting ready for takeout. Not us though. We had decided long before that we were floating the length of this sucker, late fees or not, and that is exactly what we did. For another hour more we were the only ones on river, us and three others who we convinced to join in. As we saw the town past on our left hand side we took that as our queue to get out. Using our hands as paddles we made our way to shore to get out. The only problem was that it was a very muddy shore. We made it back to the rental lodge to return our tubes, our lower portions caked in mud. They refused to give us our deposit and we laughed in their face. The extra seven bucks was well worth the fun we had had. We said goodbye to our fellow river runners, the remaining three and made our way back to our room. After a quick rinsing off we went out to pick up a pizza to bring back for dinner.
Along the way we saw the most curious sight. Remember all those beds with all the TV’s playing reruns of Friends? Well they were full. Packed. For some reason or another that is what everyone wanted to do. No clubs or bars or places like that for socialization: only Friends. It was an odd sight. We later deduced, when we went to pick up our pizza, that everyone watching was most likely stoned. For when we went to get our pepperoni and cheese for take away, the lady asked us if we wanted to make it a “Happy Pizza”. We asked what exactly that entailed, in which she replied “You know, it will make you happy.” Mystery solved. Also on offer: magic shakes, happy burgers, happy everything. It was happy land, hence all the beds and Friends reruns. We left the next afternoon, nursing a bag of wine/river hangover all the way to Vientiane.
