Marlon Williams performed a triumphant set this past weekend at the Austin City Limits Music Festival in Austin, Texas. Photographer Bailey Flores was on the scene shooting for The 13th Floor and has come up with this collection of Marlon and his band in action.

The 13th Floor’s Marty Duda is in Austin, Texas attending the Austin City Limits Festival. It’s Day 3 of the ACL and here is his report…
Hi folks, one thing I’ve figured out about this year’s ACL Festival is that with the diversity of musical talent on offer, one can make the festival pretty much whatever you want it to be. Glancing over the lineup for Sunday, I decided it would be a rootsy/country/Americana kind of day.
I started out bright and early by catching Shane Smith & The Saints at 11:30 in the morning. Shane and his crew are from Austin and feature guitar, fiddle, stand up bass and drums. Their style ranges from country-rock to Cajun to Celtic to Appalachian folk. As soon as I heard them I was reminded Adam McGrath and The Eastern.
Smith’s songwriting comes from the same blue collar well that Bruce Springsteen draws from. He writes about coal miners and average workers just trying to get by.
Although it was early in the day, Shane and his Saints drew a healthy crowd, many of whom were sporting Shane Smith T-shirts and singing along to many of the songs. They obviously have a strong local following and its well-deserved.
I then managed to catch the first two songs by country singer Kacey Musgraves. The self-

proclaimed “Dime Store Cowgirl” was accompanied by a band decked out in flashy Nudie suits (despite the hot weather). She opened with the title track from her latest album, Pageant Material, its clever wordplay expressing just what a down-to-earth kinda gal she is. The second song, Biscuits features the line, “mind your own biscuits and life will be gravy”. It’s this type of homespun charm that has made Musgraves a star. I would have liked to have heard more but…
Marlon Williams was due to make his ACL debut and there was no way I was going to miss that. Fortunately Marlon and his band were playing under a shelter, so the afternoon sun was not an issue.
Aside from his short-cropped hair, Marlon looked and sounded the same as ever, which, of course, was fantastic. I got the feeling most of the folks in the audience had only read about Marlon and were hearing him for the first time. Their reaction when he sang When I Was A Young Girl and then Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ Portrait Of A Man was priceless. Jaws were literally dropping when they heard Marlon’s stunning voice.
Marlon and the band rocked out as well, with an excellent guitar dual between Dave Khan and Marlon also getting the crowded revved up. The set was a total triumph.
From there I quickly darted across the part to catch another critical darling…Margo Price. She described her music from the stage as “shit-kicking country” and that’s pretty much what it was. Price’s voice reminds me of classic country vocalists such as Tammy Wynette and Loretta Lynn and sure enough she proceed to cover Loretta’s Rated X and followed that with Doug Sahm’s Give Back The Key To My Heart. Overall, Margo Price sounded a bit too derivative at times but its early days and I look forward to hearing more from her.
Then, after a brief break, it was time to see Chris Stapleton, an act that was getting quit a buzz around the festival. The Kentucky-by- Nashville musician is an accomplished songwriter with a hatful of number one country hits to his credit and he finally released his first solo album, Traveller, last year.

As soon as Stapleton and his band began to play I was transported back to the 1970s. If he was recording back then, his music would be considered Southern rock and he’d probably be a member of Molly Hatchet or The Charlie Daniels Band, if not Lynyrd Skynyrd. There were plenty of big, dirty guitar riffs and Stapleton’s wife Morgane added some choice backing vocals. The crowd loved it. As for me, I felt like I’d already heard this music before. It was cool for a while but, like Margo Price, very derivative.
That same argument holds true for the final act of the night which was HAIM. Comprised of three sisters…Danielle, Alana and Este Haim, they sound very much like Rumours-era Fleetwood Mac but with much less interesting songs. What I enjoyed most was Danielle’s guitar playing, which definitely owed a tip of the hat to Lindsey Buckingham. And then there was bass player Este Haim and her bizarre facial expressions…either she thought she was in a death metal band, or she was channelling Sissy Spacek in Carrie.
It didn’t matter, the crowd loved them…they introduced a couple of new songs from their upcoming album, which sounded just like their previous songs and all went home happy.
That’s all for this weekend. The festival starts up again on Friday and I’ll be there to check it out…maybe I’ll even catch the headliners this time.
