It's premise is a declaration of intentions and it makes you think about a lot of things. My only problem is the writing style; I find myself drifting while reading and I can't seem to connect with the characters. Alderman's impressive novel imagines a world where, first literally and then socially, culturally and politically, women hold all the power. How different, and how similar, would the world look? 🦊 What a great read! I can understand it winning the Bailey's Prize. And thus my last read in the Baileys Prize shortlist is done. The Sport of Kings by Morgan is a sprawling family history of the wealthy white family in Kentucky, The Forges. The novel has acute character sketches that show the patriarchy and racism steeped in the society. But at several instances, this does seem like The Great American novel gone wrong. - - I spent the longest time reading this novel, and hence I have a long list of opinions, that won't fit in an IG caption, on what is right and wrong in it.See link in bio. For me it is butterflies-in-the-tummy 🦋, a racing heart and stuttering conversations. - - But Riley's book is not about that. First Love from @grantabooks is a short, quick read filled with flawed characters and imperfect lives told in a perfect way. Riley makes her characters as realistic as possible and takes the reader (the non judgmental reader, mind you) on a devastating journey about marriage, first loves and family. The tone is melancholic and pensive; the words are minimally used; but the book would touch your heart.
