Sharks are feared and revered. The chances of being attacked by one of these enigmatic, perfectly evolved predators is virtually nil, yet humans persecute them relentlessly. Tens of millions of sharks are killed around the world every year – to make shark-fin soup, considered a delicacy in China – and many populations have been fished to extinction. As this photo of a critically endangered scalloped hammerhead shows, sharks are beautiful animals – and without them, our ocean ecosystems would collapse.

The 2019 Baja 1000 will be a loop race of 1288 kilometer (800.5 miles) in the northern state of Mexico’s majestic Baja California peninsula. With a total time limit of 34 hours in the elapsed-time race, the motorcycle and quad classes will start at 03:00hr (PT) Friday 22nd November 2019 and the car, truck and UTV classes will follow with their start on at 10:30 hr (PT). While the fastest vehicles are expected to cover the course in approximately 16 hours, all vehicles will have 34 hours from the time each starts to become an official finisher.

Pre-race festivities include two days of contingency and the Manufacturer’s Midway (Wednesday, Nov. 20 and Thursday, Nov. 21) on Boulevard Costero adjacent to the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center. Contingency will run each day from 09:00hr to 17:00hr and pre-race tech will be held from 09:00hr to 18:00hr each day. On Wednesday (Nov. 20), contingency will be held for all motorcycles, quads and UTV classes along with several car/truck classes.

On Thursday (Nov. 21), contingency will be held for the balance of the car and truck classes including the Trophy Truck, TT Legend, unlimited Class 1, Spec Trophy Truck and Class 10.

The year was 1962, in Grand Prix racing Honda did overwhelmingly dominate. In off-road however, the Japanese company had basically no impact. This was about to change when two Honda motorcycles ridden by two desert racers traversed the Mexican Baja peninsula from Tijuana at the US border across San Diego to La Paz, Baja California Sur in less than 40 hours.

It was Honda's plan to show how reliable and durable their motorcycles in harsh off-road conditions are.
