For the kitchen witch that likes to infuse flavours into their craft. I got this idea from a couple of fellow witches and decided to give it a try. Ingredients are easy.
equal parts water and sugar (ie: 1 cup of sugar and one cup of water) for the syrup
generous supply of whatever herb you are wanting to infuse into the syrup and even more water
For this tutorial I used red rose (food grade) and orange peel. I also used bottled water to make sure it was good clean water. Feel free to use different brands of bottle water. I, personally, used the 35 bottles for $3.50 at walmart.
First step is to make a nice strong tea from your herbs. I used roughly bottle of water for the orange because I only had 1oz. With the roses I had 2oz so I used roughly a bottle and a half of water.
Bring water/herb to a boil, stirring regularly.
Let boil for around 5-8 minutes then remove from heat and let seep for an additional 5 minutes (you can cover it or leave it uncovered). *Also, I sprinkled in a minute amount of salt to infuse a little cleansing/protection into my syrup*
Once it’s seeped, strain into a bowl, there will most likely be pieces of your herb in the brew. I pressed my herbs to make sure I got as much of the tea/herb water as possible.
Strain a couple times to make sure you get all the chunks of herb out (unless you want to retain a few for *aesthetic*. I strained between the bowl and pot about three or four times to make sure I got all the pulp out.
Next it’s time to make your simple syrup. Simple syrup is just 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar, bring to boil until sugar is dissolved. Measure out your brew, add to simple syrup and add an equal amount of sugar and boil until sugar dissolves. Alternately, you can use JUST your brew and equal amounts of sugar.
Once it’s been boiled, remove from heat and let cool for a bit. I recommend straining one more time to make sure you got all the undesirable stuff out.
Final step... let cool then bottle it up! I re-purposed a couple glass bottles
