Day 24, Friday July 26, 2019
All day - beach day! I had been missing the ocean, Karachi is a city by the sea, and something about the cld salt water always has a way to set things into a balance - and I had been missing a swim. I could not have been happier seeing this one on the schedule!
I walked over towards Brighton Beach Avenue and went looking for two places that were mentioned to eat at. The first was Güllüoglu Baklava Cafe, they had a variety and an extensive selection of baklava. The famed cafe is known to have its baklava imported from the Istanbul factory, where they have been baking the famous Turkish dessert for over a century. I asked for the Pistachio Bakhlava, the woman behind the counter recommended it, as one of the best choices. It was absolutely amazing, the perfect balance of sweetness and the texture was just amazing, flaky and soft - just perfect!
The second was a little further, on Neptune Avenue, Tone-Cafe! The beloved neighbourhood restaurant is famous for serving a menu of Georgian eats. I went over at the counter and ordered the Georgian cheese bread, Khachapuri. I got it to go, so that I could sit by the beach and eat with a spectacular view - it was delicious and I happen to love love bread!
The Ford Amphitheater was last on my list for the day, there was a free concert, Fela! The sensual, eclectic sounds and powerful lyrics of Fela Kuti, the founding father of Afrobeat. A live performance by 10-piece Afrobeat band, with nine singers and dancers who brought to life Fela’s provocative spirit. The concert featured members of the original Broadway cast from the highly acclaimed Tony Award winning production Fela! There was mad energy amongst the crowd - made me want to move a little to the beats as well - and I surely did!
As I the concert ended, I walked over to the boardwalk and as I was backtracking my way back to the station - I saw fireworks - it was such a lovely way to end such a wonderful day - fireworks always leave me feeling so happy - something about colourful explosions in the sky - I cannot explain the feeling - there is something child-like and simple about this experience.
