Cruella de Vil (2021)
AU where Merlin exchanges his life for Arthur's because "he's the once and future king, his life is worth a thousand of mine". He's magic itself so he should be able to create a spell that can do that. It's just that Merlin doesn't know he's immortal, so he curses him with the gift of immortality.
Arthur is finally able to create Camelot's golden era, lifts the ban on magic and reigns for decades. Unfortunately, without Merlin and once his friends and wife die, he loses sight of his goal. Lost to grief and tired from having lived for so long he becomes a tyrant if only so someone can free him from his curse.
But try as they might no one is capable of killing him. Arthur gives up the throne so he can find the cure himself.
At first, he convinces himself that he hates Merlin for what he did to him. But as the years pass, he accepts that what he wants above all is to meet him again.
Merlin carries Arthur's lifeless body, one foot near the shore. Arthur stopped breathing long before they got on Kilgharrah, or possibly during the ride. Arthur has no pulse, he's cold and weighs a little more now than he did before.
"I failed?" Merlin says distressed.
It isn't until Kilgharrah tells him there's nothing he can do that he stops.
That means Merlin would've gone to the end of the world searching for a cure. It's likely he's still searching for it, not so much as waiting for Arthur to rise again
