Today, March 26, 2022, marks 1 year since the release of one of the most criminally underrated video games of 2021. It may not be a perfect game, but the 3D platformer brought nostalgia to gamers who are fans of the particular genre.
The announcement trailer of Balan Wonderworld got everyone hyped and excited because of how whimsical it felt and the charismatic titular protagonist is reminiscent of NiGHTS the Nightmaren. However, after it was officially released, it gave people a rough impression due to its flaws. While it's great to hear that the soundtrack, graphics, cutscenes, and character designs were highly praised, it's heartbreaking to know that BWW suffered negative reception from critics for gameplay-related issues and technical problems and didn't perform well in commercial sales.
What's even sadder is that many people jumped on the hate bandwagon and took the critics' words to heart without experiencing the gameplay firsthand. They took it too far by attacking and harassing those who loved the game. To hinder someone from enjoying something is a form of gatekeeping and it's totally NOT okay to do that. Perhaps the detractors didn't realize that BWW is geared towards a younger demographic.
On the bright side, there's wonderful fanart, fanfiction, comics, comic dubs, and servers dedicated to Balan in various Internet platforms such as DeviantArt, Twitter, Wattpad, AO3, Tumblr, YouTube, and Discord. BWW may be widely panned by the masses, but the fanmade content goes to show that Balan has a loving and supportive audience and community.
Let's continue to give well-deserved love to the serotonin-inducing maestro and the game by creating more awesome content. I hope that in the future, whether near or far, BWW will be called a cult classic. I may be asking too much, but I also hope that issues will be fixed for a new and improved version.
