Balaphone Solo By Master Griot Famoro Dioubate
The Red Guitar and Do It Now with Tony Vacca. #live #livemixing #unionwork #spokenword #guitar #redguitar #balaphone #doitnow (at Shea Theater Arts Center)
“Toy Garden” is a performance piece I wrote for 2 balaphones.
Composed by: (Zachary Young)
“The balaphone is a kind of wooden xylophone or percussion idiophone which plays melodic tunes, and usually has between 16 to 27 keys. It has been played in Africa since the 14th century; it originated in Mali, according to the Manding history narrated by the griots. - Wikipedia

Everything in this piece has been played by me, from the Drums to the Balaphone, to the Synthesizer Roland SH 09. Lyrics are a cut selection of freestyles by Scrooges.
The balaphone, a musical from West Africa, is being considered for inclusion on Unesco's Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
The instrument is built up from 17 to 21 wooden slats on top of two rows of calabashes that serve as amplifiers or resonators.
In Guinea, the story goes that the king of the Sosso people, Soumaoro Kante, received the first balaphone directly from the spirits but would not allow anyone else to touch it until he heard a griot - a musician and storyteller - playing it.
Guinean musician Mosi Conde, who is from a griot family, [explains] why he thinks the instrument should be preserved.
