On this woodland floor below the Acer pseudoplatanus (sycamore, sycamore maple) trees the Anemone blanda (winter windflower, sapphire anemone, Balkan anemone, Grecian windflower) were coming into flower. This spreading perennial forms clumps in a well-drained, humus-rich soil and needs a dry dormancy after flowering.

These Anemone blanda (Balkan anemone, Grecian windflower, winter windflower) have been flowering for the last three weeks. This spreading, tuberous-rooted perennial is native to southeastern Europe and thrives in the free drainage conditions of my gravel driveway where the plants have seeded. There is a range of the depth of blue in the flowers and this has occurred as the plants have crossed with the white flowered cultivar Anemone blanda ‘White Splendour'.
