The spring ephemerals are pushing hard on Chestnut Ridge in Coopers Rock State Forest. Photos above are from a long hike last weekened. From top: long-spurred violet (Viola rostrata); halberd-leaved yellow violet (Viola hastata); two-leaf toothwort (Cardamine diphylla), also known as broad-leaved toothwort; a ghost-like West Virginia white butterfly (Pieris virginiensis), whose host plant is the two-leaf toothwort; and the ever dainty and gorgeous wood anemone (Anemonoides quinquefolia), also known as nightcaps and windflower.
