list five things that make you happy, then put this in the askbox for the last 10 people who reblogged something from you. learn to know your mutuals and followers.♡
I've been thinking about dancing quite a bit after talking with @blmpff recently so I'll list 5 choreos that always brighten my day. Apologies but it was a perfect excuse for a ramble! I just can't help myself sometimes.
1. Hyunjin - Play with Fire (Sam Tinnesz, Yacht Money)
chor. Hyunjin
The fluidity of this boy's moves! He has some kind of ethereal charisma to him that I cannot quite pinpoint. This does not prevent him from showing off some sharp pops. I prefer this video to the official performance because the editing lets you see the whole silhouette.
2. Ten x Win Win - lovely (Billie Eilish, Khalid) (ring and portrait remix)
chor. the boys themselves!
I am a sucker for modern dance and I do like most of NCT endeavours. This choreo being a non-professional attempt at the genre is pretty admirable. It's also interesting to see how different WinWin's and Ten's dancing styles are. WinWin's moves are cleaner and more precise (he's trained in traditional Chinese dance) but they are not as effortless and "flowy" as Ten's. Still, the boys complement each other very well. Make them dance with each other more!
3. B.I. & crew - BTBT
chor. AITTY TOO
If you want to see the definition of groove this is a piece to watch. It has it all - amazing fluid moves, killer footwork and so much swag.
SO. MUCH. SWAG.
4. Taemin x Koharu Sugawara - Move
chor. Koharu Sugawara
Instant k-pop classic. Sugawara's efficient and tight flow suits Taemin perfectly. The choreography is sensual, it's gender-defying, and it complements the song to the dot. Funny that the effect it has on viewers is not caused by the use of show-off moves but rather by the study in restraint. The control both dancers have over their bodies and the tension and release they are playing with are extremely appealing.
5. BalletBoyz - Us
chor. Christopher Wheeldon
Top of the top, cream of the cream. My ultimate favourite M/M choreography. It evokes emotions in me I never knew existed. It defies expectations and norms as the pas de deux of this kind is not a duet two male dancers do often. When I saw it live I was walking aimlessly for an hour after the show to put myself back together.
The way the dancers portray various sides of masculinity through sheer strength, the art of balance and delicate gestures is otherworldly. It makes me think of all the @wen-kexing-apologist touch-oriented meta. The range and intensity of emotions conveyed within those three minutes are more convincing than half of the stories where actual words are exchanged. For real, this choreography paired with Keaton Henson's haunting string music is one of the most romantic pieces my eyes have witnessed. Look at the trust they have in each other at 1:15, look at those fingertips at 2:54. Oooof!
(At this point I have to stop myself because I AM SO NOT NORMAL ABOUT THIS CHOREO. Give me a dance BL/QL story where the plot's climax is done through a duet like that. I WOULD DIE HAPPY.)
just very obsessed with the sartorial vibes on display here, looking forward to seeing them on stage in less than two weeks!
Balletboyz - England on Fire
Went on national TV today.
I am a respectable dance historian and critic, what can I say?
Michael Nunn and William Trevitt of BalletBoyz share insights into how they created "Great Performances: Romeo and Juliet," now streaming on ALL ARTS.
Next, we had to work out what changes had to be made in order to fit the three acts of the stage production into a cinematic 90 minutes. We started by listening to various recordings of the score, as well as reacquainting ourselves with the ballet, so that we could work out which parts weren’t integral to driving the plot forwards. There are a few big, group dance sequences that we could afford to lose because they don’t have much narrative content, and although they look fabulous on the Royal Opera House stage, we felt they would stand out too much as set pieces when shot for a cinema audience. We also slightly condensed the length of the ballet by layering sections of dance so they happen at the same time.
