Will you ever do a post on the stepsisters' ballgowns? They always have fun outfits
Why didn't I think of that before? :)
While of course the stepsisters' ballgowns vary according to the different time periods in which the adaptations take place, and according to just how silly and caricatured each particular set of stepsisters is meant to be, they still have certain qualities in common. They tend to be at least a little gaudy, and sometimes very gaudy, with bright colors, frills, ribbons, flowers, feathers (feathers are very common), exaggerated crinolines or bustles if they live in an era when those were in style, and ostentatious hairstyles, hats, or headdresses. All in contrast to the simpler beauty and elegance of Cinderella's attire.
Interestingly, Perrault's version of the tale describes the stepsisters' ballgowns in vivid detail. The fashion he describes is late 17th century fashion, which was contemporary for him, and the elder stepsister wears a red velvet gown with "English trimmings" (the latter usually changed to "French lace" in English translations), while the younger one wears a golden-flowered overdress and a diamond stomacher on top of her ordinary petticoat. Yet so far, I've never seen an adaptation follow these descriptions. The only one that comes close, oddly enough, is the anime Cinderella Monogatari, where the costumes are in a vaguely 17th century style and stepsister Jeanne's overdress is red while stepsister Catherine's is trimmed with gold.
Here's a sample of different stepsisters' looks;
The stepsisters from the Betty Boop cartoon Poor Cinderella, 1934
Yelena Yunger and Tamara Sezenyovskaya as Anna and Marianna in Zolushka, 1947 (with Fania Ranevskaya as their mother)
Anastasia and Drizella in Disney's animated classic, 1950
Lisa Daniels and Amanda Blake as Serafina and Birdena in The Glass Slipper, 1955
Kaye Ballard and Alice Ghostley as Portia and Joy in Rodgers & Hammerstein's muscal, 1957 (with Ilka Chase as their mother)
Pat Carroll and Barbara Ruick as Prunella and Esmeralda in Rodgers & Hammerstein's musical, 1965
(These costumes might look familiar to Mel Brooks fans, since years later they were reused in Robin Hood: Men in Tights when Will Scarlett O’Hara and Ahchoo dress as women.)
Dana Hlaváčová and Ruzena Merunková as Dorota and Katerina in Popelka, 1969
Dana Hlaváčová again, as the one stepsister Dora in Three Wishes for Cinderella, 1973 (with Libuše Šafránková as Cinderella)
Rosalind Ayres and Sherrie Hewson as Isobella and Palatine in The Slipper and the Rose, 1976 (with Margaret Lockwood as their mother)
Jane Alden and Edie McClurg as Arlene and Bertha in Faerie Tale Theatre, 1985
Grizelda and Phoebe in Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics, 1989
Roswitha Schreiner and Claudia Knichel in Aschenputtel, 1989 (with Krista Stadler as their mother)
(To the first and second balls they wear pastel-colored gowns, but at the third ball, like all the other girls, they try to copy the mysterious "princess" – Cinderella – by wearing silver gowns, only to faint when she arrives dressed in gold instead.)
Catherine and Jeanne in Cinderella Monogatari, 1996 (with their mother)
Veanne Cox and Natalie Desselle as Calliope and Minerva in Rodgers & Hamerstein's musical, 1997 (with Bernadette Peters as their mother)
Megan Dodds and Melanie Lynskey as Marguerite and Jacqueline in Ever After, 1998
Johanna Paliege as the one stepsister Clothilde in Märchenperlen, 2010
(There are three balls in this version, but she wears similar pink prom-like dresses to all of them.)
Pheline Roggan as the one stepsister Annabella in Sechs auf einen Streich, 2011
Sophie McShera and Holliday Grainger as Drisella and Anastasia in Disney's live action remake, 2015
Charlotte Spencer and Maddie Biallio as Narissa and Malvolia in Kay Cannon's musical, 2021
Ingrid Giæver as Dora in the Norwegian remake of Three Wishes for Cinderella, 2021
As a bonus, here are some operatic sopranos and mezzos in their ballgowns as Clorinda and Tisbe in Rossini's La Cenerentola...
And some ballerinas and ballerinos in Prokofiev's ballet:
Up to My Eyeballs in Crossover Commissions (Which is No Bad Thing)
Commission for @Timariss on Deviant Art, who wanted a My Little Pony/Equestria Girls/Disney's Fantasia crossover. The montage-like nature of the illustration was my idea, and definitely a departure from my usual, but I really enjoyed breaking the mold, etc.
The idea and text of the speech bubble belongs to @Timariss ; the execution of the idea, and dress designs for Fluttershy, Twilight and Sunset, are mine.
Ember's dress design belongs to @QueenCold
So Dreamy ✨🌌 ~
