An overture to the new semester: updated what’s in my pencil case

At one of the exams, a classmate of mine wanted to borrow a pen... I handed him my pencil-case so he could choose: “Cockroaches and your pencil case will be the last things left after humanity destroys itself.” 

I still carry around more than necessary and less than I’d like to fit in my pencil case... Staedtler, Stabilo, Muji, random bits and pieces and my two darling Ballograf Epoca pens are what my life cannot be lived without.

Ballograf Epoca P isn’t the best pen in the world or anything, but the ink is archival and I like the design. I realized buying a cheap used one at the thrift store is easier than hunting down a store that sells the ink cartridges. For some reason the cartridges I’ve bought always seem to have flow problems, but the old pens rarely do (until they run out, that is).

The real problem occurred when I accidentally took the pen apart in more and tinier pieces than I had intended. That click mechanism is surprisingly complex! Eventually I gave up and googled, and found that Ballograf’s support page has a diagram of how to put your pen back together again. So that was helpful.

According to the site the ink has a shelf-life of about 3 years, which may explain the problems with the cartridges. I guess if you buy them straight from their site you’d get fresh ink, but then there’s shipping too...

Dear Ballograf,

your ballpoint pens have a nice design and weight and come in many attractive colors including bright yellow, but as long as you use that godawful dried-up ink that requires me to use actual muscle force for every single letter I write, I am not buying a single one of them again. Because that’s just not ergonomic.
