Into Cambodia's wild north east!
So I'm back in Cambodia on route to Laos. I was originally heading further north in Vietnam to cross the border to Laos, but my new route escapes the torrential rain and I'm all for that! And I now have a travel companion, Alessandro! We made the hairy journey to the border together and when we arrived with not a tourist in sight, I was glad to have had the company.
Actually the crossing wasn't too bad. Took less than half and hour to leave Vietnam and get our visa on the Cambodian side. It was the wait for the onwards travel that was more of a challenge. I'd read online that there are minibuses waiting to take you to Banlung, when in fact you have to wait to hitch a ride from a pick up van or truck passing back through. So we waited, three hours just about, until a minivan piled high with noodles and crisps agreed to take us, stopping at all their drop offs on route!
It was a 10 hour journey in all, arriving at the Banlung Balcony guesthouse, overlooking a lake, just in time for sunset. Beautiful and well worth the journey. Banlung, although a small town, is the capital of Ratanakiri province in north east Cambodia. The region is sparsely populated but home to 12 different ethnic minority groups of indigenous people, giving Ratanakiri a sort of 'edge of civilisation' feel to it.
It's not the easiest place to get to, unless like us you're passing through from Vietnam, and so it's often forgotten on the typical traveller route, adding to the appeal. Take me through unused borders and forgotten lands any day! For those not adding Ratanakiri to their itinerary, they are missing out on its unique natural beauty, impressive undulating hills and mountains, dense impenetrable forests, crater lakes, rivers and waterfalls.
We spent a day on a motorbike passing through villages to visit and swim at the deserted waterfalls. It was the perfect opportunity to drive the bike on the quiet and dusty roads, so with the wind blowing through my hair, I led the way to the final waterfall.
The next day we spent the afternoon at the Boeng Yeak Lom Lake, a very beautiful volcanic blue crater freshwater lake that is surrounded by 300 hectares of jungle. Perfectly circular, some believe it was created by a meteor, although most agree that it was caused by a volcanic eruption some 700,000 years ago.
Being the weekend, it was busy with locals having picnics, drinking beer and splashing about. We found a quiet spot on a tree laying in the water to sunbathe, swim and fool about. So thankful of the Vietnamese rain and my detour back into Cambodia, I love this country! The people are sweet, the girls are very pretty, the food is good and there's a real calm pace to life. But alas, Laos awaits me.
