I though, Well, fuckin' can I be arsed with the cunt any more? But once you take six months off you stand back and [think], Do I really wanna be in the studio when I'm not sure about a song and see a load of people who are paid to agree. If I ask, "Am I doing the right thing here?" do I want people saying "Yes, Robbie, you are." Again, I never weighed that up - but looking at it now, I wouldn't want that. I respect Liam's opinion more than anybody else's on the planet.”

I was working with Oasis as a producer and ideas man on their sixth album. Liam and Noel were working separately on their own songs and I was assigned to Liam, the charismatic frontman.
It was one lunchtime, very early on in our relationship, that he told me, out of the blue: 'Me and our kid never speak. Never.'
'So how do you get things done?' I asked. He told me the management sorted out all the arrangements.
'In fact, I've only been round our kid's gaff once,' he said. 'I hardly know him. We're so different.'
I looked around the table to gauge the sentiment. Nobody was saying a thing.
Having worked before with brothers in a band, I knew that this must be rubbish. I simply shrugged, said 'OK' and left it at that.
Right answer. A friend of the Gallaghers told me later that Noel and Liam often say this to team members, just to see if they will criticise the absent brother behind his back. It's a test.
'Fall for it and the chances are you'll be frozen out,' I was told.

"I can't be him either," chirps Noel. "I've seen him, on tour, drink for days and days and days and you'll see him in the hotel lobby and he looks like he's just got back off holiday. I'd be in fucking tears. He's got that force of nature thing. But he can't get his head round the fact that it wouldn't be Oasis without him. End of story. If he wasn't the singer, I'd have written all those songs regardless. I might have even been a singer in a band but it wouldn't have been anywhere near as exciting or as big without him, but he doesn't see that. He constantly needs to reassure himself that he's vital to what Oasis is. When we're doing these big stadium gigs and there 60,000 people chanting, 'Lee-um! Lee-um!' I'm like, 'Is that not enough for you?' So I just put it down to... he's a fucking idiot. But he's my idiot, I guess."

Lead singer Liam Gallagher is on stage in three hours and his Ralph Lauren button-down needs attention. Bless him. His anxiety about his laundry provokes an angry outburst peppered with a volley of four-letter words. All I do is sit back, with the confidence of the man who thought to go drip-dry, and bleep out the swear words in this and many of the exchanges that follow. "I've asked her nice five bleeping times, and I've never ironed a bleeping shirt in my life, man.' The band don't seem too bothered, busily setting about a vegetable curry. A roadie - obviously new - tries to help. 'Don't poke your bleeping nose in.' It falls to Noel Gallagher to shut his younger brother up - "Anyone want to wipe my arse while they're at it?'
