Pain.
All the young merman could feel was pain.
His body ached in ways he wasn’t accustomed to, and his tail felt like it was on fire. Slowly, he opened his eyes, the scene before him revealing a most perplexing situation. He was in what appeared to be a box, although it was clear, and there were people standing around him in white coats with pieces of wood with white things on them, on which they seemed to be writing.
Green eyes trained on the people in the room before him, he slowly pushed himself into a sitting position, his tail twitching occasionally like a cat who was observing its prey. After a few minutes of prolonged eye contact and people scurrying around, Dean looked around his captive containment case.
He was on what appeared to be a small ledge that connected to a large salt-water tank that held a few fish, a large plastic shell, some kelp, and another smaller shelf. All of these things were stationed at the bottom, and from what he saw, he had a good 30 feet above him to reach the top of the structure.
Cautiously, he exited the little enclave and swam up to the top, then down to the bottom, the spiked fin along his spine allowing him more speed as he swam. Once he settled down towards the bottom, he began to swim in an almost pace like motion, green hateful eyes locked on the humans.
He had been captured, and that was all that he knew.
