04x35 - Intruder
TW: Mental health and suicide discussion in terms from the 1980's.
Ken and Malcolm are patrolling with Ken complaining about how hungry he is. Despite it being early morning, he could murder a hamburger. "At this time? You must have worms!" Malcolm teases. Ken chases after an idiot who shouts at them. Malcolm calls him back and tells him to leave him be just as a second boy jumps out of a coach with a bag full. The first was a decoy so their mate could get away with what he'd stolen. Ken calls for backup and they continue to chase him but Malcolm gets diverted to a break-in at a paper shop. Ken catches his suspect but has to let him go when he hears Malcolm's suspect is armed with a knife.
Malcolm nervously makes his way inside. All is quiet and the lights are off. He finally sees his suspect, Martin Horton at the end of an aisle. Malcolm calmly asks Horton to put the blade away but tells him he can keep the milk he's drinking from the carton. The owner of the shop comes back and insults Horton. Malcolm has to force him out of the shop again so he doesn't get hurt which means he loses Horton for a few seconds. When he finds him again Horton runs at him and they end up tussling on the floor. Ken arrives seconds later and has to scrabble around on the floor to find the knife, get it far enough away, and then help Malcolm arrest him.
Christine heads into custody after hearing loud laughter. Malcolm is covered in clothes-washing liquid that spilled during the arrest. "Tropical Blossom, Sarge!" She walks in just as they bag the knife and seems concerned that Malcolm had to deal with Horton all by himself. Malcolm plays it down but Ken has stars in his eyes and keeps talking him up. Horton remains silent, barely making eye contact with Bob as he gestures for him to be taken to the cells. Christine calls through to Bob to say that Malcolm's bravery is worthy of a mention to those upstairs. She's worried about how prevalent knife crime has started to become. Give it 30 years, Christine...(!!!)
Speaking of Christine: Not quite mugwatch as it's not Smithy but still worthy of mention. 🤣
I wish they'd done more playtime like this throughout the years 🤣
Bob gets called back to deal with two drunks who keep shouting and protesting to be let out of the cells. They reckon they've sobered up now and think the police are holding them illegally as they've got jobs to get to. Bob asks if he's finished moaning and tells them they're not sober enough to be released and, if they don't shut up, they're for it. He'll stick them in the same cell as two very dirty and smelly winos.
Horton is sat quietly in the corner of his cell hugging his knees to his chest. He's terrified and can't look at Bob. Bob tells him he's safe and asks if he's been there before. Horton doesn't answer so Bob looks him over and realises he's removed his shoelaces so he gently takes his hand and takes the shoelaces. He reasons that nothing is ever worth trying to take your own life for and tries to comfort him. Horton literally flinches away from him. Outside Bob asks Taffy why he didn't take the shoelaces and Taffy explains he thought the man would be on the way to court in a few minutes. He then remembers Horton still has his belt so quickly goes in to get it. Bob tells him he wants the doctor to see him ASAP and Taffy to keep his eye on him.
Tosh moans at Ken for letting his suspect go as they'd been after that thief for ages. Ken told him that he had to leave him as Malcolm was on his own with an armed man. Ken looks through the collators records and finds the name and address of Horton. He was only given probation for his first offences and Malcolm calls it Soft Society (again... give it 30 years!) Bob claims that it depends on the circumstances and Ken quips that if Malcolm had gotten chopped up that morning it would have been 'circumstantial circumcision.' Bob groans at the pun and suggests they'll go for burglary as a charge for Horton. Ken and Malcolm remind him that he had a knife. Ken wants it to be attempted murder but Bob claims it doesn't come over like that in Malcolm's statement and reminds them that it's a holding charge and they can look into things more deeply now. He does tell them that the FME is on his way to see if Horton is fit to be detained. "So he's mental because he won't talk?" Ken scoffs. Bob says he's not taking a chance whilst he's custody Sergeant. Ken wants to take it further but Malcolm stops him and leads him out. Christine arrives with more paperwork. "I'm going to make a slogan. save trees, don't prosecute!" Bob sighs.
Ken claims it doesn't matter if Horton is a looney, he still came at him with a knife. Malcolm agrees with Bob - it's all part of a days work.
Christine talks things through with Derek and tells him she wants to make a press release for what Malcolm did as positive PR to counter the 'thump them first and ask questions later' image the police have been given. Derek points out what her real point for PR is... A black policeman tackling a lone knifeman.
Bob is struggling to find any medical history for Horton as he's still not talking and no one can locate medical records for him. The FME can't diagnose from just one meeting without records and can't say if it's real or acting but from what he does know he's fit to be held.
Without further information, Bob asks Tosh to push for a 24-hour extension to Horton being held at the court remand hearing. He tells him that Horton has an impairment and that they shouldn't push for a plea. The holding charge is only for burglary so it's not a foregone conclusion that it'll be allowed. The usher is allowed to bring up that they're looking into assault with an offensive weapon. The duty solicitor is asked if he's spoken to Horton but he has to admit that although he's tried he hasn't gotten anywhere. The judge explains to Horton that the police are asking to hold him for a further 24 hours with a view to some serious charges. He asks him what he has to stay and finally, Horton talks. He claims that the doctors, police, court staff, etc are pushing poison down his throat and trying to kill him. He's very paranoid. On hearing this the judge allows for him to be held for a further 24 hours on remand in police custody with no plea.
Ken tells Malcolm that he's heard Christine wants to do a press release about Malcolm's bravery that morning. Ken says he'll get a lot of brownie points for it but he scoffs, aware exactly what it is. It's because he's black and it paints the MET and Sun Hill in a good light for inclusivity. As they walk along they spot both the boys from that morning. Unfortunately one escapes on a bus but Ken manages to keep up with the other who is carrying a big holdall. However, as Ken continues to follow him. he falls when the metal frame he's climbing gives way and he lands on the floor, clutching at his back whilst his suspect gets away.
A social worker and psychiatrist are on the way to Sun Hill to visit Horton. "So? He's a mad knifer. Doesn't demote Malcolm's courage in tackling him!" Christine retorts. Bob points out that the man is obviously unfit to plead most likely due to his extreme paranoia so Christine will not get the PR that she keeps pushing for.
affy stays as the duty brief speaks with Horton but he continues to rant that the brief and Taffy are trying to kill him. Without getting any further, the brief says he'll continue to speak for him in court if necessary. Even he doesn't think he's fit to be detained. The brief tells the psych that Horton thinks there's a conspiracy against him. The psych just nods and says that's usual for Horton. Christine tells his social worker that he could be faking it. They, with more experience of him, know that is not the case. He's a paranoid schizophrenic. Christine won't be stopped and claims that that underlines Malcolm's bravery if anything.
Bob dismisses Ken from the canteen to go and help in Custody so he can have a private word with Malcolm. Bob asks what happened that morning and Malcolm admits if he could have stopped to think he wouldn't have gone in there alone but in the dark and with no time to stop he had to. He'd rather not go for the assault charge as he doesn't want to see it through. He claims it should be resisting arrest and possession of an offensive weapon. Bob lets him know that there's a potential commendation on the cards for him over the arrest and that if that's all they go for it won't be given. Malcolm is genuinely surprised and dumbfounded, claiming the case doesn't deserve it. Bob makes a comment about it not being 'good for recruitment' and Malcolm realises what it's really all about.
Ken stops the social worker from using the custody office phone to make a phone call so Christine invites her to her office to do so so she can listen in. The psychiatrist reports to Bob that Horton is in a bad way and he doubts his fitness to plea. Christine tells Bob and the pysch that the social worker is attempting to get the man's doctor to the station and locate a place in a secure unit for him. Christine snarkily points out to Bob that it could have led to a fatal episode. Bob says that that's a bit strong and there was no actual assault. The pysch agrees and points out that once the doctor arrives they'll hopefully have him away somewhere secure. The social worker tells them there's no secure unit available for them today and they have to try again the next day but it might be the day after so they're going to have to leave him with the police until there is one...!
Taffy reports that the review of the two drunks is overdue but it's only just given the problems they've had with the other man. Christine goes to look in at them and the mouthy one tells her that they're being held illegally. He demands a lawyer to make a case against the police and is stubborn enough to stick to it even though it means being held longer. Christine is not happy about there being 2 in one cell but Bob tells her he has 10 prisoners and only 6 cells and they can't all have single cells. Christine claims that it's a breach of PACE and that it needs sorting. ... So he should just build some more cells himself?
Malcolm goes to see Christine and before he can talk she tells him how proud she is of the upcoming press release and that it gives her something positive to shout about. Malcolm tells her he doesn't want to make an assault charge against Horton. Christine tells him it's false modesty but Malcolm tells her he feels used and she wouldn't push for it so hard if he was white. Christine snaps that it's his duty to present a good image to the public and they need to improve their image with the black community and that Malcolm feeling uncomfortable about it needs to come second. "This is inner London in the 1980's. We've got to use every advantage we've got!" Malcolm implies that if she forces it on him he won't say what she wants him to to the journalists. He can live with being the only black officer she has but he won't allow her to make him a pawn in her PC game.
Suddenly the custody alarm sounds and the officers run through to help. Taffy has checked on Horton and found him choking on wads of toilet roll he was stuffing down his throat. As Taffy gets him to cough it back up Christine finally gets visible proof of what she'd been fighting against. There is no way that Horton is fit to be detained or to make a plea.
This episode feels like it could have been written with Amanda Prosser in Christne's place given the repeated missteps and how she was adamant that it would go her way no matter what the others thought.
It's a real misstep for Christine, it doesn't feel like the calm friendly and sympathetic woman who tried her hardest to talk a terrified and mentally ill single mother out of suicide in Home Sweet Home.
04x01 - Light Duties

The start of Series 4 marks the beginning of the half-hour format and the first update to the theme tune.
Ted is out with now full DC Jim Carver on the Thames. Ted is loving it, but Jim most definitely is not.
They locate the body they've been looking for, nailed to a door, causing Jim to fully lose his breakfast.
Ted: "Cabin class ain't what it used to be."
Reg moans about having Christine as an Inspector, claiming it's just a PR exercise. "I ain't ever worked under a woman before!" he tells June and Viv. "No under nor over." June retorts. Robin thinks it could have been worse; she could be black as well. "That'll never happen!" Reg insists. Robin would rather have Inspector Kite back. June, Viv and Suzanne roll their eyes with June saying she can't wait to see them all kowtowing to Inspector Frazer.
Reg is running a book for Galloway's replacement as DI. Ken wants to put a bet on Burnside and asks for the odds to the surprise of everyone else. Reg says he hasn't got Frank's name in the game but as he's 'a fair man I'll give you 20... no, tell you what, 30/1." Ken bets a tenner on it. "Like taking candy from a baby." Viv tells him it's illegal to get this response...
"Charming." June sighs.
Ted spots something on the door that his corpse has been nailed to - the words 'GRASS' have been engraved into the wood. "Oh hell.." he sighs as a man approaches. Ted tells him to disappear but he won't hear of it. He identifies the body as a former snout and claims that Sun Hill have to hand him over because he's a small part of a big scene. Ted warns him to back off again before the man's boss arrives and tells him to leave.
Taffy and Tony are called to the shopping center (now West12, formerly Concorde Center) where an old man is laid unconscious on the floor. His dog is with him and won't allow them to get near him.
Malcolm Haynes tells Alec that he's settling in fine and can handle himself so not to worry about him. Alec grabs Reg in passing and adds his bet to the book before letting him continue into CAD. Reg finds Tom staring into space and clearly out of it - having just returned from sick leave when he'd been shot at the end of the last series. Tom says he's fine and quickly gets distracted by Tony calling for an ambulance for the elderly man as well as a dog warden. A lady tries to talk to the dog to get him to let them near the man's body but he bites her. Christine appears - as yet unknown to Uniform. She asks if she can be of help and Tony tries to get her to move on which she does after suggesting she might have been a doctor. Taffy says she's a bit of alright but Tony claims she seems like a 'bossy bird' and he doesn't like bossy birds.
Bob and Alec discuss Tom being on light duties. Bob is concerned that feeding the prisoners isn't light duties incase one was to flip and try and attack him. Tom catches the end of the conversation and snaps back that he can still hack it despite what they think. He asks for them to stop mollycoddling them and says he's alright but Bob pulls out his painkillers "They just for indigestion?"
Ted stalks back into CID and is still moaning about having to give up the body to Scotland Yard's Robbery and Murder squads. Mike is amused and bets they let them do all the dirty jobs first. He tells Ted to cheer up and that things will improve when they get a new governor. Ted doesn't believe it and is pissed off he's not being considered for promotion to DI as he's been a DS for over 10 years. He takes his scotch from his desk and stalks out of the room.
In the toilets, Tom is desperately sinking his painkillers out of the sight of others. Ted approaches him with a sigh and leans against the next sink, taking a slug from his bottle before offering Tom some. Tom stares at it before taking the bottle. "Some job, eh?" Ted sighs.
The dog warden has gotten the dog to move away from the old man and the paramedics have gotten him into the ambulance.
Bob and Alec speak to an old friend to ask about Christine and what she's like. They're told that she's good and has got bottle. Reg reports that Christine has arrived a day early, in civvies, and that she's in her office and 'he wouldn't climb over her to get to [Bob]!" "Where there's smoke there's fire and where there's gossip, there's Hollis..." Malcom muses when he continues his way around the station telling everyone that she has arrived.
Ted stands outside the Superintendent's office, before being distracted by a secretary. He's about to make his move before Alec distracts him by asking if he's seen Christine yet.
Ted: "... why are we whispering?"
Alec: ".... I don't know!"
Mike is amused by Alec creeping around and listening at doors. Jim tells him it's because the female inspector has arrived. Mike tells Jim that the deceased snout was linked to a large armed robbery and whilst Scotland Yard floated around that they'd captured the entire firm and gotten most of the loot back the truth is that they'd captured most of the firm and gotten half the loot back. Fingers were pointed at the investigating officer - aka - the man Ted came up against that morning. It just so happens that the snout belonged to DI Frank Burnside and disappeared 3 weeks ago. Ted is furious to hear Frank is a contender for DI at Sun Hill. "Bent Burnside?"
June visits the man from the shopping center in the hospital. He worries about his dog and she tells him she's safe and sound and not to worry. She asks him for his name and advises he carry identification with him in case it happens again. She asks if he has any big worries that could have raised his blood pressure enough to make him pass out - he has, his nephew hasn't returned home or been in contact for a while. The doctor refers him to Social Services and the nurse asks him to tell him off for wearing an expensive pocket watch in plain sight not wanting him to return as a mugging victim.
Jim warns the uniform officers in the canteen to speak to him rather than head upstairs to CID if something requires their help as it's not wise whilst Ted is in the mood he is in. Tony asks June how the old man is doing and if he's been identified yet. June tells him the name and Jim recognises the surname as being the same as the snout they fished from the river that morning. June thinks before asking him how old he would put the man at being. It fits with being the same age range as the old man's nephew. She tells Jim that his info about the blagging fits too as the old man had a solid gold pocket watch hanging from his watch chain. They literally run up to CID to update Ted who sends Jim and June to take the old man's statement and Taffy and Tony to go search the man's house. Tony hesitates on leaving, recognising the woman he'd called "love."
Tom is the first in the pub(The Latimer Arms), drowning his sorrows with several whiskeys. Jim is in the pub with uniform updating them that the old man had no idea about his nephew, he'd just put him up when he'd turned up out of the blue a few months ago. He had an idea that he'd been in trouble but he was more upset about the watch being confiscated. Ted arrives and buys everyone a drink. He's made up because he's netted £25K (today about 90K) worth of stolen high-end watches that Scotland Yard had missed. The Yard are pissed off but Brownlow is pleased with Ted finally!
Christine heads into the pub where Ted spots her and claims 'That is a bit tasty....' Mike agrees and gets up to introduce himself before Ted sits him down and heads over himself. Reg tells Mike not to be jealous when he protests and tells him exactly who she is when Ted goes over...
Love her!!!
