Barbara Wagner, BRASÍLIA TEIMOSA / STUBBORN BRASÍLIA , 2005-2007. Recife, Brasil
“For almost two years, always on Sundays, I went to Brasilia teimosa with the idea of bringing to light issues rarely touched on directly by the media, which by nature stigmatizes issues of taste, consumerism and behaviour experienced in Brazilian lower-class neighbourhoods. During the process, what attracted me most was perceiving a particular wisdom lying behind all that energy and vulgarity which is anything but self-pitying.”
bárbara wagner: A CORTE [2010s]
<
p>In THE CORTEGE, members of the popular tradition of 'maracatu' take to the streets and pose before the camera minutes before the carnival parade. Wearing costumes that represent distinct roles in the plot performed as an open theatre, court ladies, baianas, prince, princess, ambassadors, king, queen and vassals expose an allegory of social relations (specially between class and race) in Brazilian history, from its colonial foundations to the present day. In these series, conventions of 'light', 'frame' and 'pose' from portraiture in painting and photography (the chiaroscuro of Renaissance and Baroque European painting of the XVII and XVIII centuries, the typology of subjects in ethnographic photography of the XIX century and the cosmetics of editorial photography in the XX century) are referred to in order to observe social mobility in contemporary Brazil.
