Every sports fan has heard of Futbol Club Barcelona (Barça, for short). It’s one of the best football (soccer) clubs in the world. But today I’m here to talk about a confusing club from Ecuador called Barcelona Sporting Club.
Barça was founded in 1899 in Barcelona, Catalonia’s capital city. The club’s crest includes the symbol of the city of Barcelona (Saint George’s cross, red over a white background), the Catalan flag (four red bars over a yellow background), the club’s initials FCB, and the club’s colours (blue and dark red) with the drawing of an old football ball.

Now, Barcelona Sporting Club was founded in 1925 in the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador (there’s no city nor region named “Barcelona” there). And how do you imagine their crest looks like?

The proportions are slightly different and the initials say B. S. C. instead of FCB.]
And this is not just any club, it plays in the top league of Ecuador and is the only club that has played all the seasons in the top league since the beginning of professional football in the country, back in 1957, and to have never been downgraded to league B. They have won the national league 16 times, including in the year 2020.
As you can imagine, when I found out about this I was very confused. I’ve googled Barcelona Sporting Club and found photos of their first teams, and since the beginning their uniform’s colours are... the colours of the Catalan flag.

The reason for all of this is that it was founded by a group consisting mostly of Catalan immigrants, as well as some people from Ecuador. They met at the house of a Catalan immigrant named Eutimi Pérez and took the decision to found the club and elected the Ecuatorian Carlos García Ríos as the director and the Catalan Onofre Castells as their first honorary president.
The team’s name was a reference to the city of origin of some of its founders and as a sign of thanks to the Catalan community of Guayaquil, who helped start the club.
At first they wore black clothes, but they were told that there was another team called Camisas Negras (Black Shirts) that wore the same clothes, so they changed them. In 1927, one of the members, the also Catalan immigrant Albert March, created the new design based on the colours of Catalonia’s flag.
