Hey all! I commissioned the fabulous @smallpapers to depict one of my favorite interactions from an earlier SCOM chapter!
The False Golden Guard arc has lasted WAY longer than I had initially planned -- but I promise we will figure out their identity! They are just a devious little bastard who likes to torture Hunter (and me).
“Osran.” Raine’s voice held thick, but steady. “This was not part of the deal… “
“Oh wasn’t it?” Osran cocked his head. “There was no specification as to what your performance space should look like…is your stage fright getting the best of you? How sad.”
Hunter blinked. He heard his own voice echo in his ears. “This is …”
“A perfect replica of Belos’ main throne room, of course!” Osran smiled. “He was very much a showman. All the ceremony and pageantry. I thought it fitting, do you not agree?” His eyes slid over to Hunter.
Trio of Sweet Child fan art paintings by @threegoblinart ! The middle one was actually a commission but I told Three Goblin to take artistic freedom with it and make sure it was something that could be used as a print — which she did!
Definitely check out her KOFI and InPrint shops for originals and prints!
I was SO nervous about writing this chapter, because it marks the end of Bard! Hunter scenes in SCOM -- but it's been SO FREAKING cathartic to write.
I really hope you all like it.
Preview below.
Hunter stood out front, covered in sweat and ash staring directly into Osran’s blazing eyes.
“You, absolute befoulment upon witchkind.” He growled. Upon his head, the fingers that made for his hair began to writhe, the fist behind his back opened.
Hunter felt a pull from within his body, his veins had begun to expand and his body began to lift once more off the floor.
“It doesn’t matter.” Hunter sighed. “I can do this. I’m ready to do this interview. I’m done being their target. Willow, you? Me? Our child? Our family isn’t going to be their – their – ENTERTAINMENT anymore.” He thought of Willow, so sick and trying to keep a brave face while Boscha and her wife had devalued everything they’d built together. In their own hometown! No more. He looked at Darius. At Perry and Steve. Raine, Eda. King. Then at his mother and wife. “I won't let them use me to hurt any of you. Not ever again.”
In the past:
“I know. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” Hunter dropped to his knees, “Captain. I won’t fail you, I promise.” He retreated into himself. His body and voice became small. One thought consumed him. It was a common plea when he was younger and Belos had been disappointed in him, but now that he knew what it felt to care so deeply for someone who actually returned those feelings? “Please don’t leave me.” he sobbed.

Hunter wanted to do something good, but unfortunately he's a perennial target.
After a day of playing barista while raising money for sigil removal research, he has one bad customer.
Edric and Josh have ... concerns.
Flapjack began to flutter in his chest, as Hunter felt his body begin to glow. Hunter placed his glyph on the ground. His hand hovered over the middle.
“DON’T YOU DARE!” Edric gasped from a few feet away. He pointed at Hunter’s glyph shaking his head furiously. “DON”T.”
“What?” Hunter turned to meet Ed’s eye. “Why not?” He spun his head around to see Josh waving his hands around furiously.
Josh shook his shaggy head, the Guinea Pig Palisman still on top.
“Man!” Josh said. “This place doesn’t have an insurance policy that covers damage by… YOU!”
