I'd love to hear your thoughts about my gelding's hooves! These photos were taken one day post trim by my farrier. Overall he's sound and happy with these feet, but I feel like there might be some things to change and improve. The horse is a 10yo warmblood, has been barefoot all his life and with this same farrier for the past 6 years since I bought him. He has a tendency for flares and is sort of sensitive (he is really sore for a week if you take away just a bit too much). I rasp away cracks myself pretty frequently and give him a touch up about 4 weeks in. He's on a 6 week farrier schedule.

So I’m looking for a new farrier (mum won’t let me do Brandon’s feet), and I come across this picture displayed on a local farrier’s facebook page. Now I know his is meant to be remedial shoeing, but how is this considered good?! Why is he showing this off? Can any farriers/trimmers give any insight on this?

barefoothooves would you take a look at these for me? I made an attempt with the fronts but gave up on the hinds. Elsie is a 20 y/o 14 hh TWH/pony cross, approx 960 lbs. She lives outside 24/7 on approx 7 acres of scrubby weeds with her buddies and likes to hang out in the creek. She is an in-your-pocket pony so the full body pic I wanted didn’t happen but I tried.

Romeo’s owner has given me the go-ahead to do some work with his hooves. My phone camera really doesn’t want to focus in the barn, so I may have to start bringing my camera out there.  Even without trimming, just being out of shoes for a week really seems to have had some improvement - heels are a little less contracted, big cracks in the toes looking better.

I did a tiny bit of trimming this morning, mostly to see everything and get a feel for the tools (turns out I rasp left handed, but do everything else right handed.  Wouldn’t have thought that...).  Anyway, their farrier has recommended putting iodine on the bottom of his feet to harden them up and hoof conditioner on the outside a couple times a week.  I’m skipping the hoof conditioner part, but he definitely needs stuff applied to the bottoms - I picked up his left front and was immediately hit with an overwhelming smell of death.  Lots of diseased flaps on the frog that needed to come off, I’m sure I could still take some more off if I tried.  Right front is a little better, at least in the sense that it doesn’t smell like death.  Bars all over the place.  I need another hoof knife, so I couldn’t do much with them.  Haven’t looked at or touched his hinds yet.  One step at a time!  I figure since I’ll be bringing him up and putting stuff on his feet Monday-Thursdays that I’ll do a little bit of trimming at a time and slowly get both of us used to it.

Just in case you doubted, barefoothooves is 100% hoof nerd. My mom gave them our compound microscope the other night and today I’ve hardly seen them except when I came to help/watch or while we ate dinner.

Is anyone willing to help me with my horse's hooves? I'm not sure I'm satisfied with the new barn farriers job.. This photo was taken two days after a trim and I don't feel like you can even tell... He still has bad flaring and cracking? He's always had really bad looking feet and I am trying to learn how go correct them. Does anyone have any thoughts about it? barefoothooves , would you have any kind of input? Thanks to anyone willing to help!

These are George's hooves as of tonight - I know he's got some under-run heels and seriously out of control bars right now. There's something bizarre going on with his white line, you can especially see it in the front left - it's stretched and pink. I just noticed it tonight, so if anyone has input as to what could be causing it, go ahead and shoot. This is about 3 weeks after a trim, and he's currently trimmed by an AANHCP practitioner. I'll probably be taking him over myself once I go to the Liberated Horsemanship gateway clinic in June.

He's an OTTB, he's 1300lbs and 16.1hh, and his diet is actually changing right now, he's currently on 9lbs of Nutrena Pro Force Fiber (12/13, 7% sugar, 13% starch), 2lbs of rice bran, and 3lbs of alfalfa daily in addition to free choice grass hay. He's going to be switching to 9lbs Legend's Performance Pellet (12/10, 4% sugar, 9% starch), 2lbs Legend's Omega Plus (extruded flax supplement), and 3lbs of Alfalfa. I'm trying to keep the inflammatory triggers as low as possible, but with him being such a picky eater and hard keeper, it's difficult. I'm changing it because I'm really just not happy with the NSC of the Nutrena, and he doesn't need that much fat now that he's gained the weight.

He's turned out 24/7 on a dry lot with three others, it's been really muddy and wet out there for the past two months or so, but right now it's frozen solid. 

Anyone wanna give him a hoof critique?? barefoothooves, idk who else to tag, whoever else wants to add input go ahead!!

barefoothooves I have a question, again. My family owns a really old shetlandpony, he’s 50+ (not joking) and over the last year I noticed how his hooves were growing real slow. Last year I only trimmed him two times!! The outer walls don’t bother me too much since he doesn’t wear them down much. But I am really worried about his frog. Especially on one foot it is extremely small and seems to not grow anymore. Is there anything I can do to support it? Right now he doesn’t seem to be in pain when he walks around but he’s sensitive when I pick his feet, especially in the collateral grooves.

If you need me to take any photos I can do that tomorrow.
