The promised bit of discussion, if you will....

I’m of the opinion the writers on the show all suck, are wildly unprofessional and beyond fucking stupid....I’ve long pointed out the show is filled with cliches, tends towards misery porn as shocker, is horribly paced, makes it obvious there’s generally no REAL plan going forward, invariably misses countless amazing opportunities with its mysteries (GK and the Farm should’ve totally been tied together as a satanic blood cult AND organ harvesting front---AND they never really managed to effectively tie up the GK, anyway....), etc...

Oh and I completely despise “reset” arcs, late introduction of mains who have single purposes that they never fully move away from (honestly, fully applies to Tinkle and Molars....and they showed up in season 2....they still suck on every level....tho less offensive, weirdly, together)....

And I haaattteee misery porn

And OFC, I hate(d) Barfie....

Yet, bizarrely, season five actually worked QUITE well, season 6 seemingly is promising to (despite being pretty confident Plaiderdale PP will be a weak, one noted mustache twirler), etc....which is NOT what I thought would be the case, at all....

To whit:

For starters, I’m not offended in the same way that Jug was written as a “loser”, because his spiral made a fair amount of sense, gave Cole a lot of meaty shit to work with and, effectively, the real plot of the season was him facing his demons, fixing himself and working through all his issues....additionally, unlike much of our juvenile fandumb, I can understand IRL problems like slipping into addiction and debt and then working your way forward.....

Versus becoming a disgusting fascist psycho killah and the fandumb merely deciding that was “bad ass”....

I also looovveeddd that Jug accomplished (and very early recognized this) with Tabs’s very gentle, but supportive and constant help, first as his friend and then as his lover....and while I’d normally haaaattttteee the heavy handed introduction of a character CLEARLY slated to be his LI, here it worked really nicely....

TBH, it probably would just be hackneyed soap if anybody BUT Erinn and Cole were in the roles, but they played it sooo well, sweetly and beautifully, that it truly made the misery porn (including icky Barfie sexytimes) worth it.

Another thing I doubt the writers intended, but it did happen in five was Slizzy being such an utter, selfish, psychotic cuntwipe simply revealed a simple truth: BH was always a spiraling, toxic mess....we just chose to ignore it.

Again, I don’t think the writers were remotely skilled enough, not do they even think out 2 seconds past anything....buuuuutt....it does work out that way and, honestly? I now fully delight in the destruction of all it....which, again, maybe NOT their intent, but most assuredly how it all translates....

It’s to the point where I even lowkey ship jackbooted fascist thug Barfie...cuz, hey, they DO have that in common----and I legit enjoy watching them suffer in this facade they’ve both always wanted, thinking they’ve finally fucked everybody over....while discovering each sucks in bed, is dumb AF and and the only real happiness either EVER obtains in life is from violence and control...

Ditto Vagey ARE well suited (tho I do continue to hope and pray for the hinted quadrangle, cuz everybody miserable and unsatisfying, hopefully finally B&V scratching each other’s eyes out, etc....is FAB)---and I also love them as a near-crime power couple....cuz they’ve both ALWAYS been shady, so I continue to not understand this idea that Vermin’s sweetness and light....she isn’t. But HER criminal leanings take a different tone from the fascism her “best friends” follow.

I also love it cuz remember everybody looking down on gang leader Jug?

It was hypocrisy then, it’s hypocrisy, now....if anything, we’ll get a plot of Vermin legit becoming her dad and realicing she likes it...

Oh and I do love how we’re having less and less Tinkle the social worker (never not fucking hilarious) and moar Minkle/Gholars the violent thugs....I am hoping it means Jug takes back the Serpents and again, transforms to a pack of dogooders...

Soooo....I just realiced, in reality, season five worked (and continues to work) because the reset, again, merely

A) showed us, quite effectively, how all the “OG” couples were toxic, icky shit and really, you probably won’t and shouldn’t be endgame with your high school sweetheart

B) Albeit unwittingly, as @petalsmooth has pointed out innumerable times, Slizzy is now written as a villain. Doesn’t mean she’s gonna be the show’s Big Bad, but she is....so is Douchie (again, fascist thug hypocrites are not “good”), so are Vermin and Ragey always was.....which, honestly, is not a new thing....but it’s now a lot moar overt....and it works....

They were always all shitty people, now the show’s seemingly leaning into that a bit harder....and I loooooovvvvveeee it...

C) Conversely, Jughead IS the hero---or LBR, Tabitha is...and the show fully recognises this...FINALLY....while Pussy is busily Miss Havisham...

D) In retrospect a LOT of campy, which they further leaned into, OFC, in the Vale....but I suspect we’ll see plenty coming up....which, again, works....

So, when all was said and done season 5 didn’t ignore the previous four seasons, it brought everything full circle, wrapped it quite neatly (and, honestly, the show could’ve effectively ended, cliffhangers and all in 5x19 and worked pretty nicely if I’m being real, here....excepting I would’ve wanted Jabi safely making love in their apartment)---and, in fact, fully harkened to everything...
