william and olive compete in the district bee when theyre in high school together and one of them always ends up winning and going to county again so near the end of their spelling adventures they spend more energy with each other than with the competition

(of course theyre still competitive, but nowhere near as much as they were as kids- at least in the district bee, which is easier anyway)
