The rest of the world is still drowsy. Deep within the Battle Café, people murmur softly to each other, their words formless and quiet, every sentence smeared slow and blurring. A mug thuds against the table. Slides. In his lungs, sticky sweet, the smell of coffee. Kabu picks up the remainder of his tea just as Melony says goodbye, and he finds someone else coming in.
Piers. She winks a quick hello, a bell chimes above, and the door finally slows to a hushed close behind her.
Kabu tastes tea, bitter warm in his mouth.
”I hear you've passed the torch," he says at last. "Is that right?" The cup sleeve is cooling down in his palm. So will the rest of his tea. There's a tiny spark in Kabu's eyes that never dies out, though. Not even now. "Darkness may be your specialty, but allow me to say: ...Burn bright!" he calls. "I see only your blazing futures."
