there’s an old myth that runs through his family ( &&. whatever gossip that surrounds it ) that a psychic’s power surges through their hair. it’s generally accepted that one of great strength must grow it out, no matter how untamed &&. unruly it may reach. the standard is that only minimal trimmings are encouraged, as to ensure it can be navigated with some sort of ease. there’s neither concrete detail proving or disproving it, &&. no one wants to exactly argue against it. the reality is, of course, it varies from psychic to psychic as a case-by-case basis. 

although avery lacks any noteworthy psychic abilities, he still grows his out as a symbol of status. for this reason, he makes a point of taking great care of it, &&. has for the 3-4 years that he’s spent growing it out. touching it is an absolute no go ( unless given express permission ), &&. if you try, you will be restrained with telekinesis. flipping a strand over his shoulder is just an indirect, silent way to say look, i’m so much better than you.

in a theoretical sense, chopping it all off would devastate him. it essentially resetting one’s progress back to zero &&. making them rework from the ground up. never mind the social disgrace he’d feel as a result.

sometimes i think abt avery and the fact that like. pre-cutting his shit Out post-isle of armor a lot of his relationships ( for example, klara ) start out on like. very toxic terms. like he’s so used to unhealthy interpersonal relationships thanks to his family and has this fake-on-the-outside-talks-shit-behind-closed-doors mentality that like. he does not know how to form bonds and communicate in a reasonable and effective manner.
