Lovely picture I saw on fb demonstrating a homozygous barred cockerel compared to a heterozygous barred pullet. Barring is a sex linked gene so pullets can only have one copy. Male chicks will have bigger head dots if they have two copies compared to their sisters. This is how breeders who breed barred birds can sex their chicks at hatch but it can still be variable however.

When they feather in the boys will have thicker white banding on their feathers due to the two copies while the pullets will be darker due to their single copy. A cockerel with only one copy can still feather in darkly like a pullet but you shouldn't see that in pure bred barred birds.

Not sure if you've talked about this before, but how does barring work? Like in Plymouth rocks and dominiques. I've heard the chicks are autosexing but haven't been able to find specifics. Thank you!
