Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #88

Ah Querl. Querl Dox, maybe more widely known as Brainiac 5 of the Legion of Super-Heroes.

The Post-Zero Hour version of his team has some striking ties to Bart Allen that are subtle but profound if you read Impulse (1995), Flash (1987) and LoSH (1989) mainly due to the fact that this rebooted team had Mark Waid on as a writer while he was introducing Bart. Bart is from the time that LoSH operates in and if things went 100% well for Bart, he undoubtedly would have been a Legionnaire.

Querl Dox is a permanent and exceedingly important member of LoSH and likely one of the most recognizable and popular, he's had a lot of different versions of himself that can be difficult to track if you know nothing about LoSH (it's rebooted more than DC has). His back history is almost always very, very sad and tragic.

Anyway, THIS version of Querl in canon actually had a unique relationship with Bart - he found friendship in him and implied that he was the only one that voted to allow him membership as a Legionnaire. They shared a telepathic bond for months.

They are also very kindred people - both are very impulsive in different ways and are not thought very highly of by their peers and are often bullied and just not treated very well. If you read LoSH it is very easy to read Querl as being autistic having low empathy but high compassion and this gets him into trouble.

So these two autistic people that are on the spectrum in different ways come together and find an understanding with each other and a comfort that not many others can. Bart doesn't take Querl's snapping seriously, Querl doesn't let Bart's reputation influence his own perception of him.

The second the Legion starts to notice that Querl and Bart Allen are getting a lot closer than just casual friends sirens start to go off because they both are each other's enablers and never tell the other NO.

Bart is also always aggressively protective over people he loves and 100% will cause a war between Earth and Colu by protecting Querl from his long-term abusers and his mom would support him every step of the way.

Hmm.

Fucked up AU where Bart was kidnapped by the Dominators, never had his accelerated aging (or it was instantly cured), was never rescued, and assumed dead by all relevant Earth parties.

But this is also an AU where Colu sells Querl to the Dominators when he is about 13 because they really went EEK an autistic child.

Querl is brought in to assist in studying Bart, who is basically the same age as him.

The Dominators did not count on both Bart and Querl being basically the same, utterly insufferable, and almost impossible to control.

In the past the only way they could control Bart was by intubating him into VR essentially like in Kid Flash Lost with high doses of neurotoxins. Over a decade of studying speedster biology did yield some results biochemically.

Querl is something else entirely. They need his brain.

Querl obviously doesn't want to die. But he certainly doesn't want to perform vivisection because it is outside the parameters of his strict morals.

So he needs to concoct a plan. He lets Bart in on it. They try to escape when they are 16, but only Bart manages to get off the space station as Querl is re-captured.

Bart heads back to Earth and comes face to face with the Legion of Super-Heroes and a story that shakes up the stability of the United Planets because Colu sold a child into slavery and they are still there.

President Jeannie Chu warns the Legion to not act because this is now too political for their involvement and the story needed """"investigation"""""

They all say fuck that and go get him anyway.

Meloni Thawne shows up and beats the ever loving shit out of Jeannie because she was the one who comforted her when she got the news Bart was dead as a baby - Jeannie was the one who delivered her the news he was dead, and she assured she had confirmed he was dead. They had an on again off again relationship over the last 15 years.

Bart is asking first and it's probably to avoid conflict, ie Colu recalling Querl as property or some fucked up shit, because interstellar laws start getting rigid when marriage comes into play. Particularly when the marriage is between Brainiac 5 and Bart Allen who is from a high-profile family and is basically royalty.

Earthgov is not going to be happy about the marriage, but they cannot deny the union would also open to doors for some sort of political gain.

Bart wanted to spare Querl from being branded property, instead they both end up being used as political chips between Earthgov and Colu.

The love is real but that is quite irrelevant in the bigger scheme of things and people are scheming.
