English-made Empire style teapot, 1805-1815

Unusual, nearly oval-shaped basaltware teapot - ie unglazed black stoneware made in England. Richly decorated with foliage and figural motifs of woman and child. Knob in the shape of a swan on the lid. Motifs on both faces framed in fluted pilasters. Straight, fluted spout. R and D deeply stamped on the base.

From the Philadelphia Museum of Art:

This vase, one of the largest in Etruscan Ware produced at Wedgwood, is a copy of an Apulian (South Italian) volute-krater dated circa 330-310 BCE that was in collection of Sir William Hamilton. An identical Wedgwood vase is today in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The monumental vessels may have been produced for display in the Wedgwood factory's London showrooms.
