Full name: Sebastian “Bash” Alvarez
Age: 28
Birth date: February 3, 1991
Gender & pronouns: Cismale, he/him
Status: Detainee
Arrived at Belmont: September 16, 2014
Ability: Pyrogenesis (can create, control, and manipulate fire and is not burned or harmed by it in anyway. He’s extremely tolerant to heat but is vulnerable to cold. Obviously, as with any fire, water can extinguish any flame he creates or controls. While he is immune to fire, his clothes obviously are not unless they are specifically made to be so were he to engulf himself in flame (as he’s done once or twice) it would burn all of his clothes off but not anything that is part of his body (his hair, his tattoo, etc.).)

Sebastian was the kind of kid everyone looked at and just knew he was going to grow up to be no good. With parents like his, how could he be anything else? His dad was a well-known and dangerous drug dealer for the Sinaloa cartel in Mexico who everyone was afraid to look at sideways, let alone cross. The fact that he’d married a stripper and a drug addict just doomed Sebastian and his siblings to fates no better than that of their parents, at least in everyone’s minds. Sebastian was the middle child, his mother’s favourite and his father’s least. That really just meant he got dragged along to the strip club so his mom could keep an eye on him and so that he could keep her drug paraphernalia at the ready. Sebastian spent most of his childhood both terrified of his father and longing for his approval. Even as a kid, he tried to be tough, got into fights, and learned how to win them, proving everyone that thought he’d grow up to be no good right. He earned the nickname “Bash” early on and that was only further proof.
Things didn’t change much when the family relocated to San Antonio when Bash was ten. His father was sent by the cartel to help strengthen the new foothold they were building up there and the family continued to be entrenched in criminal activity. When puberty hit, things got more complicated in a number of ways. Not only did Bash find himself attracted to boys instead of girls, but he also triggered his powers. He was fourteen the first time he was in a fight and fire shot from his fists, surprising him and the other boy equally. There was obviously something very wrong with him. He’d heard enough times in his house that fags weren’t real men along with all kinds of other slurs and mutants weren’t talked about much more kindly. Bash was determined not to be what he feared. He tried to be tougher in school to cover up his sexuality, got into more fights, punished himself when he found his thoughts slipping, or found that boy in history class attractive. That worked for a while but the angrier he got, the more his powers seemed to come to the fore and trying to hide both from his dad was impossible.
Bash’s father did discover his son’s mutant abilities when Bash was fifteen and kicked him out of the house. His mother tried to stop it, in one of her rare lucid moments, but she had no power over Bash’s father so Bash was on his own. As damaging as it was, it was also oddly freeing. He didn’t have to hide anymore, his powers or his sexuality. It still took a couple of years to come to terms with the last one but without his father’s oppressive masculine force hanging over him, he managed to figure some of it out and officially came out at 18. He got a tattoo on the back of his right shoulder that looked like a rainbow trying to rip its way out from underneath his skin and was more than ready to beat the hell out of anyone who gave him shit for it and did so a number of times. It still wasn’t an easy life but he skipped town just to stay off the cartel’s radar. Since he wasn’t in school anymore and crime and fighting were mostly all he knew, he got involved with a lot of bad people. Bash didn’t have limits in what dirty jobs he was willing to do and a lot of people found that useful. He kept in nominal touch with his mother and even occasionally went home to visit her until the day he found her, unresponsive, with a needle in her arm. Bash was barely twenty at the time and finally bid farewell to San Antonio completely, vowing never to go back.
It wasn’t long before Bash fell in with some mutant extremists willing to do anything to preserve the rights of their species, no matter how destructive or dangerous. He was a formidable fighter without his powers, but with them he was damn near unstoppable and the leaders of the group found that extremely useful. They didn’t have any qualms about letting him take the fall for the whole group, though, when Bash was caught setting a building on fire for them. No one tried to help him or bust him out before he was shipped off to Belmont and promptly thrown into the Mad DOGS compound. He’s been there five years now and quickly earned a reputation not to be messed with. Bash is deeply resentful of the group he used to work with and generally mistrustful but chafes in captivity. He’s not afraid to attack guards or anyone else who gives him trouble in spite of what they do to him in retaliation. He’s very invested in the escape plan and just wants to get the hell out of here as soon as possible. Once Bash is pointed in a direction people better stand back unless they want to get caught in the carnage.

Bash channeled most of his turmoil about figuring out who he was, hiding who he was, and for a time hating who he was, into anger. His knee jerk reaction is usually a violent one and that violence and rage is almost always thrumming just under the surface. Short-tempered and unafraid of being cruel, he’s often brash and rude. He’s made a point of being dangerous and tough, wanting to prove that his sexuality doesn’t make him a stereotype, and uses violence mostly not to deal with the many issues he still has. Bash isn’t exactly sociable but he can carry on a conversation if he doesn’t find the other person overly annoying. He’s deeply loyal to and protective of those who manage to worm their way into his circle of friends and would throw himself hard against anyone or anything who threatens them, even if it meant he’d get smashed to pieces. Reactive and somewhat easily offended if his triggers are pushed, he’s not overly used to kindness or gentleness and it tends to startle him or make him suspicious. Bash can be surprisingly thoughtful, generous, and even calm with those he’s close to it’s just a matter of earning his trust and breaking down those walls to get to see that side of him.

His father was sent by the cartel to help strengthen the new foothold they were building up there and the family continued to be entrenched in criminal activity. When puberty hit, things got more complicated. His older brother had gone through it first so Bash had expected he would suddenly want to plaster his walls with racy posters of swimsuit models, look at Playboy magazines, and swagger around hoping the girls would smile at him. It didn’t. Instead, Bash found himself fascinated more by the men than the women in racy scenes in movies, and was promptly terrified by the realisation. There was obviously something wrong with him. He’d heard enough times in his house that fags weren’t real men along with all kinds of other slurs and Bash was determined not to be what he feared. He tried to be tougher in school to cover it up, got into more fights, punished himself when he found his thoughts slipping, or found that boy in history class attractive. As long as his parents never found out, as long as his dad never found out what was wrong with him, he would be fine.
Then, suddenly, his dad was gone. Bash was fifteen when his dad got arrested in an FBI bust on the cartel’s operations. That oppressive, masculine force in his life wasn’t hanging over him anymore, but it took a few years for Bash to shake the idea that he still had to impress his father. It was because of that lingering idea that a year later he dropped out of high school and started working for the cartel, mostly as an enforcer. By the time his mother died with a needle in her arm, Bash was twenty. Slowly, he’d started to figure himself out but it was too late to come out to his mom now and he never intended to come out to his dad. His brother had gone back across the border to hopefully rise in the cartel’s ranks and his sister had been determined to break out of their lifestyle and was in college out of state. He was so tired of hiding that he came out suddenly and loudly. He got a tattoo on the back of his right shoulder that looked like a rainbow was trying to rip its way out from underneath his skin and he was more than ready to beat the shit out of anyone who gave him hell for it.
It turned out that a lot of people were willing to give him hell for it and most of them were in the cartel. The life he’d been living, though already dangerous, became even more so and Bash couldn’t singlehandedly take on all the shit that was thrown his way so he took off. He skipped through several states until he ended up in Chicago. Crime being the only thing he’d known for years, he quickly found his way into Chicago’s underground and hired himself out as someone who was willing to take any sort of dirty or violent job. It was only a few months later that he came to the attention of the Whitewater Syndicate and they figured they could use a guy with his talents. He was just as violently open about his sexuality with them as he’d been with the cartel but, aside from some minor macho bullshit that he could deal with easily enough, the Syndicate didn’t seem to care so Bash had a place again. He met Wyatt Hartman early in his Syndicate days and the older man took him under his wing. They worked together on various jobs and Bash’s willingness to do any job, the more violent the better, impressed Wyatt so when he rose through the ranks, he took Bash with him. It was only natural, then, that when Wyatt took over leadership he appointed Bash his second in command. While the other members grumbled about it, they mostly knew enough by then not to mess with Bash. His fondness for knives had become well known, after all, and no one wanted to be on the receiving end of one of them. Extremely loyal to Wyatt, Bash has become something of an attack dog for him, whether it’s clearing out troublemakers at Troy or doing something more sinister, once Bash is pointed in a direction people better stand back unless they want to be caught in the carnage.
