Frigs are a tough one to pin down. I've listened to their debut album Basic Behaviour a handful of times now and each time I come up with a different idea of what this band sounds like. It's nice though, as many of the songs on the album seem to show a different side of the band. Singer Bria Salmena adds to the illusion, as she even changes her vocal styling a bit here and there to kind of fit along with the direction of the song, speaking of which, tends to run from shimmery post-punk to really drone/bass heavy pieces that venture into darker territory than I would have expected Basic Behaviour to take me. For example, listen to a song like “Solid State”, which certainly has much more of a UK post-punk vibe to it, but then it's quickly followed by pieces like “I”, “II”, and “Heavyweights”...that rely further on rumbling/warbling bass feedback while Salmena unleashes deep breathy, near spoken word, vocals over it to great atmospheric effect. Her vocals are undoubtedly going to land her plenty of Mazzy Star comparisons, but we're looking at more of a Broken Water or Concrete Blonde thing here depending on whichever song you're listening to at the time. No matter, this is some pretty solid stuff.
