Intro and Basic Definitions: What are we even talking about.

Hey there, y'all.  Still fiddling with the nuances of this, so I'm afraid the definitions won't be gorgeously spectacular (as an aside, what can one do with definitions anyway, other than format them pretty?  Ideas?), but they should serve their purpose rather well

As with everything, you start with the basic building blocks, in our case economy: the social outcome of people's unending & unfulfilled (infinite) wants (what they—dun dun DUN!—want, i.e. goods and services) and their use of scarce resources (what they have, be it labor, entrepreneurial ability, land, and capital—all of which will be expanded upon later) to fulfill those wants.

That, in turn, makes economics the social science (study) of the efficient use of scarce resources to get the maximum satisfaction of wants.

Before we break down into the specifics of the two broad 'branches' of economics, let's deal with that italicized word 'scarce'.

scarcity is when something (in our case, resources) is limited and desired/needed.

So, basically, economics the study of what we have, what we want, and how governments/societies/firms/individuals allocate their limited and desirable resources to meet their infinite wants.

Now there are two major 'types' of economics:

Microeconomics is the branch that focuses on economics of individuals and firms. Which, in case you had not gathered from the title ;) , is not out primary concern. However...

Macroeconomics is the branch of economics dealing with the performance, structure, behavior, and process of decision-making of the economy as a whole.  This is usually on a national, regional, or even global level. *coughcough*governments and societies*coughcough*   It is also our primary focus.
