Hello. You wouldn't believe who still exists.

I am back to the realm of the living, after a most hectic few months in which I've only worked on personal coding requests or some exciting stuff with friends but alas I come bearing a lesson overview code for you in inspiration of all the lesson overview editing I've been doing recently.

Might look a bit wonky on codepen buuuuuut as always, if you break anything or anything came packaged faulty just send me a message here or on discord and I shall be with you shortly.

I know I have a tendency to classify anything I love as "Punk", in the same way a child calls any tall, nice-smelling presence "Mom", BUT! I feel like homemade websites are a type of Punk. And I know it feels premature to say that basic HTML competency is a type of folk craft, but I'm not sure what else to call it.

How does something become a folk tradition? Is it the age of the practice, or how many (or few) people practice it? Folk revivalists in the 60's were idolizing artists from the depression era, which happened just 30 years prior. The world wide web is nearly 30 years old, and the internet itself over 60. There are people leading internet companies today who are far younger than the web, who never knew a world without the internet. If a teen is drawn to early web aesthetics, it is not out of a nostalgia for their youth. It is, instead, a yearning for a time from before they even existed, a time they can only imagine. That seems hella old to me, and hella folksy.

I think we are drawn to the aesthetics of the early web because it feels authentic and human, like a chair made by hand or a band playing only for the love of it. And if our modern lives are defined by the omnipresence of the internet, then idolizing Geocities pages could be seen as a way of connecting to our roots. So building a website from scratch, with hard-coded gif animations and a web-ring, is now part of the back-to-the-land tradition.

Does anyone know what happened to DanceInTheKitchen on ao3?

A few weeks ago I was trying to find a fic of theirs (I don’t know what pronouns Dance uses) and discovered that it seems ALL their fics have been deleted—not orphaned, and can only be accessed via way back machine. I haven’t been able to find out if they’re on other platforms, or what happened that made them want to delete all their work. It seems like DanceInTheKitchen had tons of fics and I really enjoyed the stuff I read back in the day. I hope they’re doing okay!
