In 2013, we looked into the possibility of collaborating on an episode with designer/director/puppeteer and MacArthur Fellowship recipient Basil Twist. It didn’t move beyond the early development stage but it was fun to explore different options an ways to incorporate abstract puppetry. Also included is the premise for an an earlier alternate version.

“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” at SHN Golden Gate Theatre

I’m not a purist. Things can change. Even classics like the works of Roald Dahl - they can be updated. Perhaps not improved, necessarily, but I’m prepared to roll with some alterations to milk different comic possibilities or adapt to changing times. And there are some funny additions here. (Making Veruca Salt’s father a Russian oligarch, for instance.) And the Oompa-Loompas created by puppet master (in the best sense!) Basil Twist are marvelous. But some of the plot changes, and dropping of key characters, and the overall bombast of the production left me feeling exhausted and headachy.
