Basilica Julia, Roman Forum
Hello from the heart of the eternal city
And from the place where the eternal flame once burned
Yes I'm going back again tomorrow while my 24 hour ticket is still valid
Latium so far. The Forum is coming along nicely ever since I put in the lighting mod and painted the ground like a Roman road. I’m not sure how many of the real forum’s buildings I’ll be putting in, or if I’m adding miniaturized versions of the other fora under Augustus after.
The buildings so far include the Temple of Castor and Pollux, the Curia Julia, the Temple of Saturn, the Temple of Concordia, the Tabularium, the Rostrum (just named “Forum Romanum” here and will include the Lacus Curtius), and the Basilica Julia. Buildings that will be added include the Temple of Vesta and the Basilica Paulli. I also feel like packing the buildings closer together for that dense urban look and so I can keep the city itself compact while the rest of the map is countryside.
For this build, I used @nilxis‘ lighting mod for Uranesia. I also made my own pavement edited from one of the textures from Monte Vista.

Temple of Caesar, Arch of Augustus (Parthian Arch form), A redone Basilica Julia, and the Basilica Paulli (”Basilica Aemilia”), plus the city so far. A wall, as you would notice, stands in for the Gemonian stairs (may not keep it if it’s a touch too anachronistic for 14 A.D.).
I had to rebuild the Curia Julia as it seemed rather anachronistic as it stands. Besides the rebuild, I am down to three or four more buildings to complete the Forum: the Mamertime Prison, the Temple of Vesta, the Regia, and the House of the Vestals. The Regia and the Vestal House will be the first homes to be built in Latium.
Now that I’ve mentioned that, I will need to mention that I do not intend at this juncture to build a Colosseum, as the IRL building was built after Augustus’ reign. I may reconsider if I’m making this a general “Rome-inspired” world for release.
A market building for the forum of Monte Vista, based on the Basilica Julia in Rome. I try mirroring as much of the real Roman Forum as I can so the city can double as the Eternal City when needed. I was heavily inspired by the eponymous HBO series in terms of aesthetic. I still use the Cinecittà Studios sets for the series as one of my references. Others include the Republican Roman architectural set in the video game 0 A.D. and a book filled with reconstructions of life in Ancient Pompeii.
I love the juxtaposition between the apparent splendor of the large public building and the grit of the market that grew beneath it. I’m planning to add more clutter to it in due time. The interior of the basilica will play host to a few rabbit holes.
This will be one of two such basilicas (covered market buildings) in the main city. The other will be an attempt to build the Basilica Aemilia, which will either be a salon or a consignment store.
Roman Architecture is a Thing I Like
so im doing my project for my Classics Fest poster board and i discover this.
these people made the Basilica Julia and Basilica Aemilia (and some other parts of the Forum Romanum) in - m i n e c r a f t -
and it’s bomb as hell
y’all need to check it out i promise its worth it
My Question for Y’all is This:
should i add some of these photos to my poster board?? I’m focusing on the architectural aspect of the Basilica Julia and i think this might be cool to show perspective of the place because it’s hard to grasp how large the building is especially when all you see are paintings and CG Reconstructions (and when comparing it to the source on LacusCurtius, it seems to be pretty spot on (they even added the balustrades which like, wow)
