Day 38  18th Century Engineering

Walked today along the basingstoke canal, starting just outside Brookwood. Built during the latter part of the 18th Century and opened in the 1790′s. Hard to imagine that men with picks and shovels created this 44 mile stretch of waterway. The part we walked today for a couple of miles had lock gates every couple of hundred yards (it seemed). What a hurculean feat of engineering it must have been. Very impressed. The light dappling through the trees and reflecting on the dark water was highly photogenic.

It had been a busy morning with a Skype call to the family in France. Today it was Bingo on the agenda. Then it was off to Tesco to collect the weekly shop. Couldn’t get a delivery slot but manged to secure a click and collect place. All worked very well.

Day 26  History Lesson

Our walk along the old Basingstoke canal took us to the point at which it meets the River Wey. This is also a junction where various modes of transport coincide and reveal 200 years worth of history. The canal itself was constructed and opened in the 1790′s linking the town of Basingstoke to the river Thames at Weybridge. In the 1830′s the rail lnk from London to Southampton was opened and crosses the canal at this precise point. Then in the 1970′s and early 1980′s the M25 orbital motorway was opened providing 117 miles of road around London. It is, again, at this exact spot that it goes over both the canal and the rail line.

A lovely walk in the afternoon sunshine with a brief rest at the newly discovered pic-nic area beside the McLaren factory. So much colour in the spring hedgerows and verges. Today we found a green strawberry plant growing beside a busy cylcle path. 

Green strawberries exhibit the youth of any given red strawberry variety that has been plucked before maturity. Their color is pale green with slight pink blushing and trademark seeds lining the firm shiny skin. The flavor of Green strawberries is lean and tart, displaying notes of green grass, kiwi and refreshing acidity. Their flesh is also less juicy, slightly cottony and firm.
