Bassmobile Progress Report #1
Howdy everyone!
So I’ve gutted and cleaned out the van and started the conversion with the help of my friend Dave! This brings me one step closer to embarking on an amazing solo bass busking (street performance) trip around North America!
Step 1: We pulled out the wooden floor which ended up having mountains of dirt and gravel underneath...yaay!! We also removed the steel bulkhead. I’m not sure yet if I’ll build a wooden one or just have a black out curtain and maybe a safety mesh (not sure if such a product exists) to allow for more space that could even include the front cabin as part of the living space.
Step 2: We pulled out the ceiling and wall linings and swept and scrubbed out the dirt.
Step 3: The old bulkhead and wooden floor required various holes in the floor for bolts etc and the paint often chipped away. To prevent any rusting in these weakened areas we coated the floor with Herculiner, a polyurethane coating with rubber granules to provide a tough, textured finish. We just did one coat as opposed to the recommended two coats since this area was just for added protection and would eventually have another flooring put over it. I may in the future coat the wheel wells and bottom portion of the outside of the body to prevent scratches and rust from the elements.
Step 4: For the flooring I chose a product called VanRug that is both comfortable and has industrial resilience against damage and dirt etc and would work well for both living and hauling gear, as well as provide a little bit of insulation. It came pre-cut for my van and was incredibly easy to install. However, we will soon reapply the foot thresholds (after cleaning and repainting them) to help fasten down the rug. We will also be putting down a piece of trim (carpet to floor edging) between the front cabin and the cargo area that we also hold down the rug.
Here’s Dave who has been incredibly helpful in letting me use his space and tools for work as well as helping out when I get stuck.
Next week I will be putting up a blackout curtain as well as reflective sun shades for the windows. Dave will also be cutting a hole in the roof (YIKES!!!!) to install a Maxx Air Fan!
