My thoughts on John Bastin
If you haven’t heard of him, this guy is a total Raffles fanatic. He published an entire book about Raffles’ family members, including his grandparents and children, his other relatives like his cousins, and his lineage. Also, that book is just one in many other books he has published about Raffles. If you google his name, you can see that almost every single book he has published is on Raffles.
The screenshot I have attached above is a footnote from his book, ‘Sir Stamford Raffles and Some of His Friends and Contemporaries: A Memoir of the Founder of Singapore’. This guy called Dr Nadia Wright’s book biased in favour of Farquhar and that it criticises Raffles relentlessly just because her book isn’t pro-Raffles 🤣 I mean, seriously? I have read halfway through her book myself, and I see it as a very balanced book that doesn’t elevate either men. This guy is seriously such a Raffles fanatic that anything that doesn’t put Raffles on a pedestal is anti-Raffles. You can say he’s the OG Raffles simp.
